Abit go POP!!!

Customer brings in a machine and says it won't boot. I turn the power on and the fans go but nothing else. I start pulling cards and swapped the power supply. Still no go. Then I noticed that it had Softmenu so I disabled it and manually set the chip and it worked. I cleared the Cmos and set it back to use Softmenu. I set the bios up and booted it into windows. Everything looked good and I walked to the phone to call the customer, then BAM! I turned to see something hit the ceiling and fall back in the case.

Well, it was a capacitor that sat behind the slot! Blew the sucker right out of there. There were at least three others that are bulged and the Abit BF6 is no more!!

Anyone ever have this happen to them before?

A friend of mine repairs dental laboratory equipment from his own business and he had a cap go off the board into his eye whilst he was fault finding. The only time he had forgotten to put his safety goggles on (he is a stickler for this , I have to even if I am just sitting there having a cuppa with him) the cap blew off the board, hitting him in the eye and after a trip to the local Casualty department, his face looked like he had been 10 rounds with Mike Tyson. Needless to say after that I always wore Safety Glasses when working over powered up equipment that had it's casing open.

Back in the days when building your own computer meant breaking out the soldering iron, sure. I accidentally wired in a transistor backwards.

Blew a couple LED's once too, when I accidentally left out a resistor. At least those don't explode.
