I'm doing a simple memory upgrade on a socket 7 motherboard, bios #'s 10/18/96-i430vx-10031996c-00 award. Going from 16 Megs of simm's to 32 Megs of dimm.
When I put the dimm memory in the 32 meg show as 8 meg, 64 megs shows as 16 megs, and 128 shows as 32 megs. What gives?
I tried to enter the correct memory size manually through Trouble Shooter. Any help would be appreciated.
Some boards using the i430VX chipset didn't support SDRAM, in fact I am sure that the earliest Intel chipset to support SDRAM was the i430TX. Some VX boards had a DIMM slot or 2 on them but these were for EDO DIMM's.

While I believe Darren is correct, I seem to remember having to use double heighted sdram for some older boards. May not be easy to get ahold of these days though.

430VX does not support x4 SDRAM configuration.
The SDRAMs, due to their synchronous nature, put extra pressure on meeting timing specifications. Specifically at 66MHz (15ns clock period), the clock skew and Hclk signal integrity become major issues. Consequently, it is purely a loading/timing reason why we cannot support x4 SDRAMs. We do support x8 or x16 SDRAMs because now loading is halved. Future chipsets are heading for higher speeds and will be even harder to meet the timings. In summary, 430VX can drive 8 loads per row. This sets our lower limit at x8.

Thank you all for your replies, I will call my local PC junk dealer and try to get my a## out of this one.
Just a quick post to let you know that I was able to find a used dimm of 32 Megs of 60 ns. Worked like a champ.
