I have a problem I've never seen before.
A customer's machine can dial up and connect to an ISP. I can see it send DATA, but it does not receive DATA.
Help!
I've replaced the modem, removed and re-installed TCP/IP, removed & reinstalled Dial-Up Networking, tried Netscape, and have used multiple accounts at multiple ISP's.
I can ping sites but had trouble with traceroute.
Any ideas?

You might be experiencing buffer overruns. Have you tried going into modem properties/connection/port settings? Try slowing the "receive buffer" down, starting at low. See if that helps, if so, increase the buffer speed until it craps out again. Might just work. LOL
Windows 98 Second Edition.
ISP's are KIH and KYOL (local companies). I also tried connected to an office computer over the phone lines.
I used Dial-Up Networking to connect. The connection is maintained (no hangups). However, after the initial communication with the ISP, no DATA is being received. If I try to go an a web address I see DATA being sent (to request DATA), but nothing is recepted. I get no DATA in.
I tried IE 5.0, upgraded to IE 5.01, installed and tried Netscape, and tried Outlook Express. When I try to go to a web site or retrieve email a small amount of DATA is sent. However, nothing is received.
While I'm connected I can ping sites from a DOS prompt. I get the response back from that.
I assume it's something screwy with Windows. Any ideas on what I can do?

DNS Server problem maybe?
Try pinging a name like www.microsoft.com instead of an IP address. If it doesn't resolve then check for proper DNS Server addresses in IP configuration.
Just a thought...
This may help. It helped my problem which was similar. I could dial out and connect to the ISP but could not get IE or any other brower to operate. The browser would open, but it would just return with "page could not be displayed".

Check the Internet Options. See if the temporary internet file setting is set to "0".
If it is and cannot be changed, remove McAfee Safe and Sound.
never heard of this problem before, were they able to go out to the internet before on that computer, maybe their temp internet files folder was deleted by the neighborhood "tech" which could of caused this problem. there is always the obvious virus question. wasn't their a virus that would keep you from going out onto the net so you couldn't update your definitions or was that just a hoax?
have you checked to make sure that ms dial up adapter is installed in network adapters and that client for ms networks is installed? also for some isp's you must have ms vpn adapter installed...
Thanks Protechpc! That fixed it. I removed Dial-Up Netoworking, removed the Winsock2 registry keys, and reinstalled Dial-Up Networking. Everything works great now.

you usually dont have to delete all of those keys, just the 2 winsock2 ones...see it happen all the time, but then again, most of the clients i see use friggin aol
