Founding a new ISP
Hi all, like dumb blond I too have been approached by an aquaintance to set up an indipendant ISP here is Australia. We have the funds, shop, hardware, access to lines and 100Mb cable connection. The thing I need to know is where to start. We are looking at around 50 to 80 subscribers per month to a total of around the 1000 (to start with).
I personally have very little knowlage of servers and routers etc, but we can have someone come in and set it up/maintain it on a weekly baisis if nessasary.
What do I do to start?
Thanks in advance to those who reply.

Should be quite easy to do, do u have good servers etc to be the backbones?

If you don't have much experience with routers and servers, plan on hiring someone as a fulltime employee.
Someone coming into just setting it up and leaving is probably not a good idea.
You don't need super fast servers to start with. Invest your capital into getting subscribers, and as the money starts coming in, then upgrade. Why have dual 1ghz servers for 20 customers if you know what I mean.
Again, my $0.02.

Also, you will probably need a license to operate as an ISP. First contact your local authorities (Telecom authorities) and ask where to proceed. Business license will also be required, and I think you need to be certified by authorities to make sure your equipment won't cause any problems with other communications equipment (interference etc)
Have all your equipment ready to go before opening up or you will have ticked off customers.
Things are different here in the US. In Australia, I am sure it is different compared tous. Good luck!

Thanks to all who replied.
The hardware isn't a problem because my future partener owns a retail shop (computer).
I have all the contacts for the cable connections.
We both have the customer contacts threw both of our business.
And we have the premisis, right in the middle of the CBD literally in the middle.
So getting the cables put in won't be an issue.
We already have the business names and accounts to start a new business and a good lawer as well.....just in case.
I might have to do some more study, so I can set up and maintain the servers and routers.
Oh well ..... we will see where we get to.
Thanks again.

Don't use NT based systems if you don't want to be hassled by hackers, etc. Most good ISP's use Sun Solaris or Unix based setups.
