Hopefully I don't need to darn my "Flame Retardent" suit prior to asking this question...
Have a customer PC which needs win98 reinstalled (no longer boots into windows). It was a gift and customer doesn't have the product ID.
Isn't there a file I can open up in the editor to search for the product ID that was installed already? I remember doing this on a Win95 machine, but it's been a while and I'm suffering from a memory leak!

I believe that you can use DOS' edit tool to look at system.dat - I think that is is one of the few non-encrypted things in the regestry.

if you can get into the registry...its in KKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
productkey has the product id

Moguth has the correct way to get the current id you can also change who its registered to and some other things here also . oh its also HKLM\... not KKlm <<typoQuote:

There is also a program that will go out and get some of the registry settings from a dos prompt I no longer have the original info, just the .exe file, so, if anyone is interested, mail me - [email protected] and i'll email it to ya.

If you're ever truly stuck..sitting there with a dead box that won't boot and all the owner can find is the cd and the license is nowhere to be found, call Redmond and tell them your sad little tale and they will give you a new key code. Then..whip out your sharpie marker and write it on the cd!

Actually I've been using a lil' DOS based proggy called diag.exe. I put it on most of my boot discs. It will read the original key unless the reg is completely toast and give other pertinent data user data from systems that are fine or can't boot, and the file is less than 30K.
if you go to the Tech Tools/Utilities section of Windrivers and then to Diagnostics section there you will find a small utility called DIAG that will reveal the product ID of windows. this is a DOS utility so it will run from the command line.
just boot to DOS and copy this utility to the HD root directory and type 'diag'. Handy!
