UPS recommendations
In wake of the current power crunch in California, I've begun thinking about getting a UPS so nothing catastrophic happens during a "rolling blackout". https://forums.windrivers.com/
The one they installed on my workstation at work is an APC 1400, but I understand it's pretty pricey. I'm just looking for something for home use, that would give me enough time to shut down during a blackout without losing any data.
Any suggestions?

Any APC SMart series UPS - the Smart series has a serial interface that will allow you to shut down your pc automatically in the case of a power failure (you may need addt'l software depending on your OS)

Hi,
Yes, APC products are not cheap...but they are the most widely used and dependable that I have seen. And no, I don't work for them. Practically all of our commercial customers use them in one form or another.

I wouldn't recommend anything but APC for a UPS. They have a great warranty/replacement system as well as being very reliable.

make sure to get one with RJ11 and RJ45 connectors on it, cause if something does happen and you smoke your system, they are gonna ask if you have a network card or modem in the machine. If you answer yes to either of these questions and you dont have a model with these features....kiss your $$ goodbye
