Do you require Proxy setting, or should you be able to browse with it blank? Give us some more detail and we can help.
Edit: Also, which OS.
no proxy setting required...hooked up to a netgear cable router...I can ping an IP address outside but can't ping the domain name. So its getting an ip, dns, gateway info from the router, but IE can't open a web page.
windows 98 SE
what version of IE? try to use 5.5 or later. If you have 5.5, use sp2 and make sure it's 128 bit encryption.
installed IE 5.5...no luck...can still ping outside but can't view any web pages..
tried to dial-up...can connect but still no luck viewing web pages!!!
sounds like winsock2 got screwed up. remove dialup networking, run regedit, remove the 2 winsock2 entries, reboot, reinstall dialup networking....usually happens with aol, but i've seen it before w/o aol
Can you veiw web pages if you bypass the router?? I was having this problem with my Linksys. Once I bypassed the router and d/l'ed the firmware update, I didnt have anymore trouble. It seems that (for me) my cable co. changes my IP for security reasons once a month and my router wasnt picking it up. Now with the firmware update, it changes automatically. Just a thought.
no, all th eother computers in the office are working fine...I had this same problem with this computer once before and comcast tech support had me use SFC to extract a couple of .dll's (which I have already done) and also delete a registry key, which I can't remember.
delete the DHCP registry key? I've had this work for me in the past.
found this on the micosoft knowledge base.....got it fixed
To remove and reinstall the TCP/IP stack:
Click Start , Settings , click Control Panel , and then double-click Network .
For each installed instance of TCP/IP, record all the settings, and then remove all TCP/IP-related network components from Network properties.
Click Cancel .
Click Start , click Settings , click Control Panel , and then double-click Add/Remove Programs .
Click the Windows Setup tab, and then double-click Communications .
Click to clear the Dial-Up Networking check box, and then click OK .
When you receive the following message, click OK twice, and then restart the computer:
Dial-up Networking is required by the following component(s) "List of components". Removing it will also remove these components. Do you want to remove Dial-up Networking and all components that require it?
Click Start , click Run , and then type regedit .
Export and delete the WinSock2 registry keys that are located in the following registry settings, and then restart the computer:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VXD\AFVXD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VXD\DHCP
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VXD\MSTCP
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VXD\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VXD\Winsock2
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\WinSock2
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\RemoteAccess\Authentication\SMM_Files
thats what i was talking about when i said remove dialup networking and removing winsock2...you normally only need to remove winsock2 to get it fixed. never have removed that other junk...
I ran into this problem before,
if your on a network,go into another workstation from the computer that is having the problem and bring up IE from there, when you bring up IE, update the browser from windows update, and restart..It worked for me.
