I have a customer system that has me stumped... Asus P5X m\b running 64mg of PC100 with an AMD K6\2 500,Diamond Speedstar vid card, SB Live Sound and Creative 56k modem. Everything works great with the exception of occasional blue screens of death when trying to open MY COMPUTER and the absence of tray icons for IE. What gives????
first check "C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch" folder to see if the internet explorer shortcut is there, if its not you can put one there. but i think the problem may be more serious, i would check for a virus and then re install internet explorer.

Thanks for the help Wuter. Its doubtful that its a virus because its a new clean install on a new system. I will run a virus check just to be sure though. At present the machine is blue screening like crazy while trying to run IE. I"m inclined to believe that you are correct in your diagnosis of something more serious. I think the next logical step is to check the error message giving the BSOD and find the source. An error this critical is usually hardware related, unlike a GPF which is software (registry) related.
Check video drivers, modem conflicts/driver, sound card driver, and install newer drivers if possible. If that doesnt' cure the problem, pull all peripherals, reseat the RAM and CPU, insert just video, and reinstall windows. Then add peripherals one at a time to find the problem.
A reinstall of windows over top of a bad install just gives you a bad reinstall.

BSOD's can also be caused by excessive heat. Make sure the case is well ventilated.
BTW - Re: "tray icons" - are you talking about the system tray icons or the quick launch toolbar icons? If it's the quick launch: right click on the taskbar, go to toolbars and make sure that there's a check next to "Quick Launch".

Thanks for the replys steve and reboot.. I wasn't very clear on my description of what I had already tried. The case was open and I had the benefit of a cpu temp monitor in the bios. The cpu temp was only about 130 degrees under a hard load, so I ruled that out as the problem. I had already checked all the resources that I know of to find the error code to no avail. However, I did find a similar code that led me to believe it had something to do with the antivirus program. As it turns out, I had two problems instead of one. I ran a Windows Stress Test program and the system didn't like my video driver. After updating that, I noticed marked improvement. To finally resolve the problem 100% I had to remove Norton Antivirus and remove all reference to Symantec from the registry. I then installed McCaffe Antivirus and it works great. I'm told by a fellow tech that Norton 200 has an update that helps to eliminate the problem. However, this machine is crucial to the customers business and I didn't want to take chances. So much for my Saturday.....lol Thanks again
