IBM MWAVE modem/soundcard

Dad wanted a faster modem for his birthday so I looked at what he had in the Aptiva P-133 and it was an IBM combo 28.8modem/sound card. I purchased a 56k modem and a PCI sound card. I installed them but still have not been able to get the last bit of the MWAVE driver package out of the system. Everything works except there is a dialog box when first coming into windows that appears 3 times and then intermittently saying that it cannot initialize device MWAVE. Anybody know how to get rid of this. The card is gone I deleted the modem out of device manager and the two new cards work great. Thanks in advance.

This one requires some registry editing. You need to remove all references to mwave in win.ini, system.ini, users, preferences, device manager, and the registry. It's a long fussy process to rid an IBM of mwave.
After much frustration doing this on other systems, I've resorted to a format/install of Win98 to get it all right. Seems easier than the 20 or 30 reboots it takes to rid the thing of the old mwave stuff.

funny, I had an Aptiva 133 "upgrade job" dropped on my bench today... the sales guy pitched a modem, sound card, memory, & hdd (ghosted from his old drive of course) to the customer and said it should only take an hour or so... Thanks for the help guys but I found my answer and resolved it last night. After a long search on the IBM Web page I found a document called Deleting MWAVE. It is a two page document explaining exactly which lines must be removed from Config.sys, Autoexec.bat, Win.ini, System.ini, and also which files should then be deleted. It was a cumbersome process but it worked. it makes no reference to regedit which is just as well cause I was poking through the registry and didn't find anything.

After playing around on this machine again I found one remnant of MWAV. Dad wouldn't have noticed it and probably wont do any harm. It left the MWAV Audio icon in control panel. The icon doesnt do anything any more but it is there and I cannot see any way to get rid of it. Any suggestions folks?

I helped my friend trade in his MWave several months ago, and I could swear that there was a little applet in the IBM Add/Remove software utility that uninstalls the MWave crap for you automatically... I guess it's not called the IBM Add/Remove Software Utility, I think it's called the Aptiva Uninstaller. I swear it's in there somewhere.... but it's been a while.

Install tweakui on dad's machine and just hide the darn icon.
Then show dad what else tweakui can do for him. He'll have a blast!! Just make sure he understands those cautions and warnings!!
