AMD Athlon see floppy in DOS but not in Windows

This is a new one on me! I'm working on an AMD Athlon 500 running 128mg PC133 ram, VooDoo3500 vid card, esoniq sound, 3com modem, all on an FIC mobo. The system has an Acer CD burner, a DVD, and a 20 gig Maxtor Hard Drive. The principle complaint was slow boot up and floppy problems. I uninstalled Norton 2000 and the slow boot went away. The system boots fine now and reads perfectly from the floppy in DOS but will not read the floppy at all in Win98. I"ve changed out the floppy, the cable and checked the cmos for any irregulatity with no success. I also removed the floppy controller from Device Manager and the system reinstalled it upon a reboot. Any Ideas?? Thanks

Any chance the "Scan for new floppy disks" box is unchecked under the PERFORMANCE tab, FILE SYSTEM settings? If so, once you boot successfully and recognize disks you should be able to uncheck it and regain boot speed.

Also check the read/write settings in cmos

Thanks for the replys Eagle and edspc. Both great suggestions. I did check the bios and it is set to read\write and the search for floppy drives is check marked under performance. This is a hair puller......grrrrr!!! Its really strange. The system calls and reads from the floppy at startup. You can boot from it!!! But as soon as Windows is up and running the floppy tries to read when called upon, but it acts like its reading a bad disk and will eventually come up with the error: Drive A in not ready Any other ideas?? https://forums.windrivers.com/images.../2000/02/1.gif)

Ok, are you ready for this?? The owner of this machine has a BackPack CDRW. In the settings for the BackPack he had set the default drive letter to, you guessed it, A:\.
I uninstalled the BackPack drivers and reinstalled them setting the drive letter to the appropriate F:\. hehehe I knew it had to be something simple. Works like a top now. Thanks for the help guys
