I'm curious as to what other shops charge for replacing a modem.
1 hour in-shop labor = $35
1 voice/fax/56k modem = $55+ tax
Total = Just over $90
If it's a out-of-shop call, labor jumps to $50.

I try to stay competitive with the others in my area.
Basic generic modem = $49.99
Normally, CNET, Lucent, etc.
Labor is dependent upon the problem associated. For example:
My modem does not work after the storm last night: Average labor is $79.99. Obviously, this will take more time for checking power and other possible problems.
I just want to upgrade from my 14.4 to a 56K modem: $49.99. Very simpe install, usually no problems encountered.
Just a thought you may want to consider. Most people have no idea on how to scan or defrag. As you well know however, regular maintenance can improve performance. I always offer a Preventative Maintenance option to all me customers for $14.99. Run scan, defrag, SFC, etc. and check the system.

The shop I used to work for (think big and red Superstore https://forums.windrivers.com/ charged $39.99/flat rate to install any kind of peripheral card, not counting the cost of the card itself. If we'd go on site, we'd usually charge $80/hour labor portal-to-portal. Needless to say, we didn't go on-site for modem installs very often.
Ya, don't sell yourself short on making housecalls. If somebody wants you to come to them, then they should pay for it. You have to account for travel time there and back, and fuel costs. Fuel wasn't a major concern until recently so don't forget about that.

Our shop's policy is to run Scandisk & Defrag free whenever time permits. We also clean the cases with a damp rag. If I see a lot of downloaded shareware I'll run a virus check as well.Quote:

The shop I work for has a program called "Monthly Maintenance" where, for $40 a month we'll do monthly computer cleanups for local businesses. We charge $40 for the first computer, and $20 for each other computer in the building. Monthly Maintenance customers also get a discount on on-site calls (only $40 an hour instead of $50). It keeps our client's computers in tip-top shape and we get a steady check each month. Also, it aquaints us with the employees (free publicity) who call us first when they have a problem at home.
On Monthly Maintenance calls we'll correct any small problems they have, answer questions, give advice, etc. There's a lot that can be done with a computer is defragging.
Lucent winmodem $41
Aopen hardware modem $69.99
install in shop $24.95
in home $85 (minimum house call charge)

The only big and red superstore that I know of has an in-store service center. If you are refering to the same one, the $39.99 flat rate was for an upgrade only. If the original part was defective, it was a flat rate repair, usually around $99.97 depending on the market this store was located in.
