Can anybody tell me where I can get a quantum 13.5gig hard drive?Ive tried maxtor,they gave me a number to a ware house in california(1800-342-3475)which I called only to hear they dont have one.I basicly need this drive for it logic board,which is not sold seperatly by no body that I know of, and maxtor has confirmed this.
I need this because the info on the drive is critical to the customer...any help would be greatly apprieciated...
Have you tried a search on Ebay or other auction sites? You may find a match if you know the model number....worth a try.
ebay is your most reliable spot, you could also try used shops like Computer Renaissance and the like but you are spinning a roulette wheel there... chances may not be good.
If you can't find the board for the HD, I would refer your customer to a professional data recovery service if the data on the drive is that important to the customer. Yes they're expensive, but it's sure cheaper than reconstructing the data from scratch.
You should also take the opportunity to sell your customer a reliable tape backup. :D

I would talk to Ruslan on this one, he will probably be able to tell you any compatible drives that you can swap the logic boards with..

Thanks everyone...looks like a done deal,think im going to try a little brain surgery and try opening the drive and swap the disk in a newer hard drive.I'll try it on not so important drive first to see if its even possible.....has anybody tried this?If so did it work?
it will probably only work if you have drives of the exact same model and version
every hard drive keeps data in a slightly differant manner, and expects tracking info, etc to be proper
not only that, but once you unseal the clean-room seal, it's very, *very* easy for drive to die

Do not open the drive unless it is really the last resort - You can do worse with data on that drive. It's supposed, what opening up the drive is safe only for drives less than 5,1Gig (without doing it in "clean room" conditions). It is first warning.
Second...
Replacing the platter (without adjusting) is possible only for drive with one-only platter.
If the drive has two or more platters - adjusting using special equpment is mandatory.
Personally I did replace the platter in single-platter drives (in WDs mostly) and have had a good luck. But anyways, I had to rewrite drive's firmware using special repair soft'n'hard complex.
You didn't say, what exactly drive's model?
First of all, You have to make sure it's really electronics failure, not mechanics.
Is that drive able to spin up? Is there no clanging sounds from the drive?
