If I could choose between (2) 75gb 7200 rpm IBM 75gxp's that would be in raid 0
... or a Seagate cheetah 18.3gb 15000rpm ultra 160scsi drive with an adaptec 160 controller ....
they are roughly the same price.

Depends what you're using them for.
For screaming performance, the choice is clear.
For drive size, the choice is clear.

Are the 7200 RPM drives ATA100 or 66? I have a set of Cheetah drives and I don't think they're everything everyone says they are.
My maxtor 40gb 7200 rpm ata100 just about holds even with the cheetahs and they sure as he!! didn't cost as much. :)
Actually, for worstation applications, the UDMA 100 drives outperform most SCSI drives. SCSI is still better in File Servers, where you have multiple simultaneous accesses, but for a workstation UDMA 100 is the way to go.
Go for the fast one. Speed is a priority for video editing and gaming.
If you're looking to house your ever-expanding clooection of MP3's, video clips, and pictures you can always get a cheap\slow hard drive for DATA storage.
If you get the cheeta, you will need some extra cooling in your case. at 15k RPM, that will probably run a little warmer than the 7200 RPM drives.
Actually this drive doesn't need any more cooling than a 10,000RPM drive because of the size of the platters: 2.5 inches versus 3.5. Less mass means the motor doesn't have to work as hard to spin it.Quote:

In my opinion I would go with the dual IBM's just because of the amount of storage involved. 150GB just sounds good. Besides, the difference in speed won't even be noticed.
6 months ago and before I would say without a doubt get the cheetah and the U160 controller. I have pondered this for many minutes and have decided the 2 IBM's is the one I would pick. Way more storage and the speed differwence would not be noticed.
Fast drives need faster MoBos, Lots of mem and fast CPU or you will be disapointed.

I don't know why you would even have to think about this one. When your talking about over 8 times the storage and probably not seeing a difference in speed. You'll be really mad at yourself if you go with the cheetah.

No offense, but everyone seems to be missing the boat here. CreepingDeath is talking about ONE Cheetah x15 compared to TWO IBM 75GXP's as Raid 0. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but the dual IBM's are clearly the way to go.
Here's how I see it:

There is no question that the Cheetah is faster. Hook five or six of those in a Raid 0 configuration and nothing else comes close. You may even use the full bandwidth of the Ultra 160 controller.
Two IBM Drives in a Raid 0 config will not only be faster than a single Cheetah X15, but will also give 8 times the storage. Not to mention the difference in price of a SCSI Ultra160 Raid controller as compared to an IDE Raid controller.
Gimme that new 180 gig Seagate harddrive, I need more room for my MP3's !!!!
If your gonna spend the money, you might as well get the most out of it, right? Personally, I think the only reason to get a P4 1.7Ghz is to make Solitaire kick butt!!

There's some good information concerning some quality problems with those drives.
I personally like the Maxtor DiamondMaxPlus 60's, but I'm sure I'll get flamed for suggesting Maxtor. I think they're pretty good right now. That or the newest Fujitsu's
