I have a customer with a strange problem.
Mcirosoft games just lock up, No problems with any other games !

The machine has a Motherboard with a VIA MVP3 chipset, amd k62350, 128 MB, Voodoo 2, Intel i740.

Micosoft games work fine under the i740 but as soon as you use the voodoo its lock up city time, at seemingly random intervals.

I reinstalled using the recomended via drivers and it just take a little longer for the lock up. I checked all the blatingly obvious including AGP aperture, IRQS etc

I have a friend using the Voodoo 2 as well on a similar system setup and he has numerous problems, and they all aren't related to games either. Everywhere I go i see mention of this card having problems. Maybe Diamond created something bad?

Your on the right track t-shoot wise but when you swap cards, you also need to reload the games that crash as they look at your HW config and install drivers based on this info. EX: If you install a game say w/V2 card and swap to another, it may not reolve our prob as some games are configured with drivers for the V2 not the other card. Seems like MS related games are more inclined to work this way but others have done this also.

I don't want to sound rude here but the Voodoo 2 Card has been considered a "Troubled Device" ! by Diamond. My recommendation is to get a Vid card designed more for compatibility and diversity vice strictly for Gaming. I've found the specialty devices like this usually do have compatibility issues without fail. Before buying, instead of going by specs alone, check groups like this one and look for others having issues with the product or the FAQ's from the manufacturers site as well. This will most certainly let you know if thre are major issues with a product. Also look at the Manufacturers site too for Driver updates. If you see several updates for something less than a year old, that's another hint as well. This is what tiped me off when looking for a new card for my systems - which is why I opted for the Viper series.

P.S. I have 3 Diamond cards, 2-Viper V330's and the new V770AGP. No problems with anything to date.

what brand motherboard cuz a couple FIC boards have big trouble with voodoo2 or 3.
I had problems occasionally when I had a monsterII card in, have had no problems so far since I have been running either CL banshees or 3dfx voodoo3 boards that are all in one boards.

Does it run for awhile then lock if so maybe you need one of those fans that sits in a slot and sucks hot air out of the case, they work great when you put them right next to these super hot-running video cards that are out now

I have stopped using any Diamond cards and I used to love them, but having way to many problems with them.

The argumrnt about overheating is ok, but why does it only happen in Microsoft games

95 or 98? SE? Is it a Monster2? I don't mean to throw out the obvious but be sure the LATEST drivers are being used. It works fine with other games? Load Unreal and a later unreal serv pack on that bad boy and push the rez. TRY to lock it. If it will run Unreal (or better yet UT) then the card and OS are probably happy. As mentioned before, the best thing is another card and reinstall the games. Lord how I hate troubleshooting end-user GAME problems. I had this dude last week - I went to his place of business (a realty co) to do some y2k testing and he says "after the tests can you look at my joystick?" "It wont work with flight simulator." Turns out it is this huge Logitech force feedback outfit - USB and all. SO I open up flightsim98 and see that "Enable Joystick" is UNCHECKED. perhaps another way out.to provide some iosolation between voodoo 2 and any other video card (mine is tnt1) i use a program called 3dcc or 3ddc written by nec.it enables you to pick primary or secondary cards from the desktop and no more lockups.
i also have a registry update that starts this program automatically.ive tried to find
on the net but failed(it was a long time ago)
but i will gladly email you the files if you
wish.

Paul, i had the exact problem with my own system. I figured heat at first and proceeded to add in fans galore. I finally swapped the card first for a voodoo banshee and then eventually went to the new riva tnt 32. No more problems. The reason for the switch to the Riva was for the extra memory and Tribes opengl patches. I still think the voodoo 2 add on has a crack in it that would eventually heat up and lock up. not all games use the voodoo unless asked for may explain the reason for it only locking up in the ms games. laterz,

It's with the primary video card not being compatible with the voodoo 2 card.

Change the primary card and your problems will vanish (prolly has by now this post is in november of 99 lmao and it's august 2000 heheheeh)

I also believe it is not the voodoo2 but infact the i740 being incompatible with the voodoo and the setup in general. Let me explain: The i740 is a intel video card, correct, and the motherboard and processor where primarily designed with AMD in mind. I have heard of problems between amd products and intel products being together at the same time.

Install the latest version of DirectX, I have had similiar issues like yours.
