100% CPU load
Hello, maybe someone can help me. My computer seems to have this issue where something puts the cpu into a 100% load. The machine runs but very slow(in the 33mhz range). I have replaced the cpu and mainboard and reloaded windows. I have also turned off all items in startup.(When I boot I have 97% resources free) I monitor the system constantly and can not seem to pinpoint the problem. It never happens at the same time, or when the same programs are running. It also does not happen everytime I use the computer. I also monitor the chip and mainboard temp thinking it is overheating but the chip never exceeds 120 degrees.
I am not sure where to go now. Is this a software issue. Or does someone have any other ideas. Any help would be appreciated.
I am running an ASUS P5A-A and an AMD K6-2 450.

If you are running disk utilties like Norton or anti virus programs, they can kill the profomance of the fastest cpu's. Try control alt delete and shut down one program at a time. Don't delete explorer or systray. This is a place to start, and it not going cost you anything to try.

Thanks. I do not have any of these type of programs running. I only turn them on when I have a problem, which is sparatic. The only programs running when I boot my machine are those needed to run windows. All other programs I launch when needed. Such as my antivirus and dial up etc. With a 450 mhz chip and 192 megs of ram this I would think would not be an issue.
While we are on the subject, I replaced the memory when I did the Motherboard and CPU.

Larommi,
What kind of peripherals are hooked to this machine? (scsi drives, tapes, etc.)

Nothing is attached to the machine. I have all the latest drivers. I have updated the bios to the most recent one. Everything is tip top. I have tested the machine with everything we have in the shop. I beleive it is software related because on reboot the problem goes away.

have you updated the antivirus and run a full scan all files? Usually when I see that it's a virus. Programs running in start-up don't usually peg you out at 100% even if there are a lot of them. Or maybe you have a trojan or back-orifice or netbus running? I don't know what virus software you use but I like Norton's. It has found things like that many times when nothing else did. You say install windows but you didnt do reformat right? Have you done task manager to see if anything unusual is running or like 2 explorers in the list (classic sign of a trojan such as an AOL password stealer). Also check win.ini (run= and load=) and also systray.ini if you even have one for anything you don't recognize. I also remove findfast from startup if you have office cuz that thing will run like crazy when it does a search. Anyhow, good luck
