I have checked the HP support forum(UK). 20 users of cdwriters complain of unreliable units(7100, 7200 9xxx). Sudden and unexplained appearance of "Trackwriter" errors where units stop writing. Reading is not a problem. Units are lightly used. HP support does not respond - will not fix problem or replace unit unless within warranty. Only solution is to trash the units some of which are just out of warranty. Sounds like a design or mfg defect to me.

I had a load of 7100i's a coupole of years ago that were al faulty in one way or the other which had been returned to me. HP's support wouldn't help at all because I was not the end user, and they would only deal on a '1-2-1' basis with the End User and each writer had to be installed at the time of the call. Since that day that they wouldn not warranty one (even though they were all literally brand spanking new) I have never sold a HP product since and o not intend to. Their Laser printers are good but that is about it. The rest of their products suck in my eyes and I totally agree that HP should recall these products (or batches of them) for testing thoroughly.

Well, I carefully reinstalled a new yamaha cdr/CDRW into my Dell machine and it works fine. No problem with Dell software, hardware, or media. It is definitely an HP device fault.
1. The machine has failed after very low usage and elapsed time since purchase.
2. HP support were not helpful. They would not acknowledge numerous related messages on their internal customer forum.
3. This problem is not confined to just one or two similar HP models. There are at least 4 models listed in their forum.
Plan to forward problem to PCWorld to see what they can do.
