CPU Cooling Software
I remember software that supposedly assisted in cooling your CPU. Does anyone know of anywhere to look? Anyone recommend anything? I remember a program called Rain that I used on my old PII and it worked like a charm. But it doesn't see my T-Bird!!

ACPI does a similar job to RAIN, by slowing the CPU down when idle to keep the temp low. Disabling ACPI can increase the CPU temp by upto 10C, which is about the same temp difference that RAIN made.
What temp is your T-Bird running at presently? Anything upto about 45C idle is perfectly fine.

It was running at about 43. But lats night I found a program call CPUCool at www.zdnet.com and now it's at 28. MAJOR CHANGE!! And I really haven't noticed a major drop in performance.
I installed CPUCool last night and the PC has been on since then. And it's stable at 28!

I will have a look at that then if you are getting that much of a drop in temp!!!!

Back when I was into overclocking, I used CPUIdle extensively and never got results which brought down the temperature by close to 20 degrees!
This sounds phenomenal!

I installed CPUCool the other day after reading this and uninstalled it within 10 minutes as it slowed my system down to a crawl literally, you could see windows slowing right up as you were using the actual system. Upon minimising the app it stated 19C!!!!!! I reopened it and had a look at the actual settings for it and it was displaying an unknown temperature (Temp1 out of Temp 1 - 3 with Temp2 the System Temp & Temp3 the CPU temp) that isn't displayed on the VIA Hardware Monitor (had both side by side to see what the temps really were). The lowest it went down to was 43C (from 45C) so no real change there. I wasn't impressed by it at all.
I also asked a couple of other people who I know to install it just to make sure that it wasn't me , and they all had similar experiences, i.e. systems slowing right down to a crawl (One was a 1.4Ghz Athlon and the other was a dual 1.2 MP) whilst showing an extra temperature monitor that was not present in the system.

well. mine is still working...but it's leveled off at 30/31. And to verify it i restarted the PC and checked the temp in the CMOS...low and behold...it was at 31. i dunno...maybe i've been lucky so far. i'll keep my fingers crossed!!! https://forums.windrivers.com/
