cd-rom 52X slow
i cannot get my bios (motherbard = asus a7v133) to allow my cd-rom 52X (panasonic) to operate in any udma modes, only pio. i am only using a udma 33 ribbon cable, but this should still suport udma modes 1 and 2. i do not have any other devices on the ide cable.
what has gone wrong?
-
faulty cable?
first thing i would check.

Without being rude how the hey do you know its using PIO mode?
Almost all cd's use PIO mode all the time, only using DMA on request or when directed specifically by an application.
You are right the cable has nothing to do with it.
OR are you talking about the little check box in device manager for the CD unit. This variously shows as tickable/not dependant on the 4-in-1 version.

i know its pio cause my bios tells me.
i try to set it to udma modes 1/2 but it will not work
-
Confused is correct, PIO mode4 is what the bios will detect always, MWDMA mode2 is the best the cdrom will support in Windows.

Does your CDrom support DMA? Also if your trying to put it on a chain with a CDRW you'll WANT to leave it in PIO mode.

ok the manufacturer has told me that udma mode is "an option" but has not told me how to enable it. I have tried updating firmware but this doesnt seem to work. does anyone know how to do it (if it matters, drive is the samsung 152L)

I was going to say check your manual ,,, http://www.samsungelectronics.co.uk/index.html lists a couple of 152s ,,,with manuals ,,,cant see any "advertising" of the modes though. ,,,,and then I loked again and say that your origional post said "panasonic"
you can forget the 52 speed ,,what a load of *ollocks ,,,at a curtain point on a test cd it "may" get 52 ,,,,in reality a lot less.
one of the best "audio ripping" cd-roms is the plextor 40max scsi,,,,,,and going at "full blast" u might get 24-28 out of it.
not much speed difference above 24 ,,,
