Memory

I AM either building my next game system on the 733 coppermine on an I820 board or an Athlon 750 on the ASUS K7M but what I cannot figure out is the way to go on the memory. PC133 or PC100 ECC, this is a gaming machine solely, and the tech articles lead me to believe that there is not a noticeable performance to justify PC133 memory price, and of course the instablility of it on most motherboards.I plan on installing at least 384 MB of this memory right away. (like the last system) games do fly with more, but it's only PC100 6ns. Any recommendations would be apprecitiated.

For Stability, Stay with Intel.
Intel is Plug & Play
AMD is Plug & Patch

I have not heard of a good Athlon board that supports pc133 yet. I would not expect to see one untill after the first of the year. I could be wrong but I have not seen any reviews. Listen to what people are saying and do you own research. Either chip will get you what you want, so it comes down what you want to spend. Myself, I am building an Athlon system but I have not seen a board I am happy with yet. Either way I will be one of the first in my area to have one.

As to the last post, that probably would not be the case if Intel and Micro$oft were not in bed together. I guess that is what the DOJ is for. Hopefully they will go after Intel next.

AMD has really come along in the last few years, and now it is time that they are taken seriously!

It appears the shoe is on the other foot! Intel is still having trouble delivering a COMPLETE retail Coppermine system where as AMD is easily delivering their K7 systems. Motherboard manufacturers are stepping up to fill the demand for AMD. Now if we can only convince some of these vendors from packaging sub performing components with the AMD packages...

Hey Boys, I've mounted hundred of pc and recently i've managed to make a system based on K7. It's a very Nuclear Power. By the way. the very strange thing it's that i've mounted a k7M with pc100 Sdram experiencing enourmously instability. Changing them with pc133 all works otpimal and more. The ASUS K7M is another good shot for the asustek, believe me!

I appreciate the responses, but if you know for fact (personal experience) that PC133 memory will work on a ASUS K7M, PLEASE tell me what brand you used and up to what BIOS revision you went up to, if that was what helped with compatibility, because my K7M board manual said it would handle PC133 and it kicks fatal errors like crazy when I install it,(even with Bios ver.1006 & 1007). I ran Forefronts Troubleshooter and it goes nuts when the memory ws installed in the K7M, but if I put it in my Tyan S1590 it's great and tests normally. So I am stuck with the PC100, (switched the Memory in my two systems), ain't that a twist, PC100 in the Atlon and PC133 in the K6-3 450...

I have an Asus K7M(1.04) and use Micron PC-133 (128mb) with no problems at all.And also have it O/C from 500~600mhz with a modified Alpha cooler and its all very stable and lightning fast.Planning on buying some golden fingers to see what it will do with a few mod's to my cooling system.

Intel is still using an outdated x86 chipset that requires stacks to operate. AMD's major drawback at the beginning of it's induction into the computer industry is that it tried to modify it's instruction set to fit x86. After they realized that it was outdated they rebuilt it. The new instruction sets are four times faster at floating point then Intel and incompatibility problems no longer exist as the market is supporting AMD as a major contender to Intel. They are used in 9 of 10 of the world's leading OEM manufacturers and over 50% of the world's laptops. Check out www.kryotech.com where they have the first gigahurtz processor. Don't tell me they're plug and patch.

No ASUS K7M will work with PC 133 Ram. Check out Sharkyextreme.com for bench tests.
