I know I saw this on here before but now that I need it I can't find it...Is there such a thing in 2000 as the msconfig in win 98? If not what is the procedure to stop auto starting programs?

1st check the startup folder and also check the services (administrative tools) to see which programs are starting when the computer starts up.
I've seen a thread about it a long ago here in these forums.
Among others, someone said that you can copy and use Win9x msconfig without any particular problems. Some Services may fail, but it works. At least, that's what he said.
I'm sure there are lots of similar Startup Editors for Win2K and XP on the web and some of them are free.
I would try <a href="http://www.download.com" target="_blank">www.download.com</a>
Good luck!
check your e-mail
win 2k doesn't come with msconfig.exe but you can ask some one with win98 and send it to you or if you want i can sent it to you
i think the previous post kinda solved his problem.
Got it my e-mail and it works great...thanks all

I wonder if the MSconfig for XP works with 2k better than the 98 one?
is there a different between the msconfig's for win98 and winxp.
i have win98 at work and i just copied to msconfig to a disk and going to use it on my win2k.
i also have a friend with winxp.
is one msconfig better than the other one or are they both the same?
well, when i ran msconfig for 98 it gave me a bunch of errors starting up but i could still remove stuff from startup. The errors from what I could tell were from stuff it couldn't find due to it being 2k. Since 2k and XP are so closely related I would think it would run better, in theory.

how about msconfig from winME
would that be any different?
since i have access to a win98 and winME pc at work
msconfig from XP runs better i think its due to the fact that they are bth built around the NT kernel. It is a possibility...
I prefer Msconfig for XP. I think it's by far the best version out there. But, if you're asking on which version you should try to copy to a 2K config, I would try ME and XP. I would think the one for XP would be the best, but as it was released after 2k, if may/maynot be compatable. I'd try the XP version first, then ME, then 98.
heres a little link to some good progs that do the job

hope it helps
Here's something...
Win2K has an option to view your startup files, but not modify them. Go under Administrative tools --> System Information --> Software Environment --> Startup Programs... Can't touch it!
I've always edited it through the registry though. For autoexec.bat/config.sys (for all OS) you can just edit the files from C:\, for system.ini/win.ini edit them from c:\windows\ (win9x-me), as for the stuff that you can't seem to find open up RegEdit (from start--->run), and look in these places:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Runonce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/RunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/RunOnceEx
Kind of a complicated process to do something so simple, but it gets the job done.
Hope that helps
