Can See Novell Directories, but not WEB!

I have a Pentium II, with Win 98 connected to a Novell 5 LAN. When I boot up I can see my various directories in "My Computer" but can't connect to the web-message at bottom of browser state "server can't be located". I've checked my network settings(DNS, etc.), browser connections, checked the hub(switch)port, and switched patch cords from a "connected" computer,rebooted, and the tried again. The other computer connects to the web, but the original Pentium II cannot. I've checked the network hardware in the System, and it states the NIC is working(3Com). Should I try try reinstall the NIC driver? many thanks for any help!

If you can see mapped drives on the "troubled" computer, then the client is working properly and there is no need to reinstall anything.

What you should check is the browser settings. Make sure they match the other workstation that can access the web. Also the TCP/IP settings in control panel should be identical to the other machine. From what you've described it sounds like you've already done this, but just checking.

Just a thought, make sure you haven't run out of Netware licenses. If you have a 25 user license, and the 26th user tries to connect to the network, all sorts of weird stuff can happen...

Don't believe that the lack of Netware licenses would effect the web browsing. Then again I haven't messed with Novell since 4.12. But definitely check your web browsers for proxy settings. If you are running a proxy, no proxy setting in your browser will cause funky web errors.

Check That tcpip is working on your machine. A simple ping to another known host on the network will tell you if communication is working properly.

incidentally if you get an error code 10045 or similar you might want to try running ws2bakup a batch file in your windows\system directory (this has to be done from command prompt, press F8 on bootup) We had this problem a while ago on our Novell network after upgrading some Novell client software on some machines. Theres a document somewhere on the Novell site.

A good idea would be to winipcfg.. and check the settings..

Ws2backup isn't for Windows 98 - it's only for Win95 So DON'T USE IT !!

instead you might try SFC.EXE


try this course of action :

1. Ping an IP (not an address)
2. Ping your DNS servers and gateway..
3. if you use DHCP release and renew..
4. use a large oping to check for network problesm.
5. use tracert to see where the problem's along the way.
6. check your routing table using : route print
