ok i just got DSL from possibly the most anoying isp in the univesre (i dont have a choice in the matter) I get a POS USB modem. my question is if i buy say a dsl/router will it work with my connection or do different isp's use different a frequency or set up making it only possible to use their equipment. believe me my isp has a monopoly and pulls this kind of stunt all the time
i don't believe you can use a router in that case. The USB modem has to plug into the computer, and then the only way to share is to use ICS or plug in the router between the computer and the rest of the network (with a second NIC). I would try to get an Ethernet modem, I know that a lot of providers offer one, but you have to specifically ask for it.
They think they are too hard to configure. I used a USB DSL modem before..and it was terrible. It put a big strain on the CPU, and caused all kinds of reliability problems. If all else fails, you can alwyas buy an Ethernet DSL modem.
I believe that as long as the connection coming in is the same (to my understanding, it is) it shouldn't matter what DSL modem you have connected. Usually the ISPs, like to have you buy theirs, but I'm sure you can use any one you want.
I know there are a lot of people on this board that use their own DSL routers for their connections.
If you scream and shout loud enough, you may be able to get the ISP to provide you with a real DSL modem that connects to ethernet instead of a crappy USB dongle.
Don't count on the ISP to use "ADSL Standard" technology.

Etislalat they have the state monopoly so i am stuck when you ask you get "yes we have both kinds of modem internal and USB"!! i would have gone with the internal modem but i do not have a spare PCI slot. I only rent the thing so they can have it back any time :(
The only stumbling block with using your own DSL modem is that you may be required to program the MAC address ... some isp's have an access control list based on the MAC addresses. Before going with the dsl modem make sure you know the usb modem's mac address.
Thanks Guys i think i am going to have to stick with what i got i cant even configure the latest drivers from eficient because my ISP uses some wierd config. Even they dont know the setings or are unwilling to give them

Yeah , you have to buy your ip and use that and if you route it it will be the same ip but for more machines. Im not sure you can share the connection.
I would set up ICS to share the connection. There are ways to find out the information that you need, but your ISP won't generally help you, as they do not want more than one machine sharing the bandwith without you paying for another line.
