Need help setting up FTP through router.

Hi,

I need some serious help! I'm trying to setup a FTP server going through a D-Link DI-704. I've tried using both Serve-U FTP and Bulletproof FTP as my server.
I have already opened the ports in the router config and even setup triggers (per D-Link tech support...which is a joke!) I have upgraded the router to the newest Firmware. And I'm about to go nuts!

I can log into the FTP on my computer and everything works great. However, when someone else logs into the server, they connect just fine, but they can't see anything on my system.
I would really appreciate any insight to this problem.

do you hae the rights setup correctly for each user? make sure they have read and list rights to the directories you wan them to have access to.

also, can you login to your admin account on a machine outside your network?

Which port? 21 ? try 20 too ...
Have you setup INCOMING other than OUTGOING filter... and how?

Are you using official IP's? What is your network (attached to an ISP?) and what is 'someone else's network (from the Internet?)?

this is usually a passive transfer issue. the problem lie in that ftp is a tcp native protocol and doesn't like NAT. your router is doing NAT.

not sure on the solution.. never got this running correctly myself in a natted situation..

How do you know, that the router is doing NAT? well... even then... it's that that the connect works, but the filetransfer not... hmmm...

With NAT you can do port-translation from outside to inside and that should work for FTP (I've set this up for customers and they never complained... think it has worked then :D ... never tried myself though *grin*)

Best would be a description of the network... better than guessing...

Do you also have the directory permissions as well as the IIS FTP permissions setup coreectly? The directory permissions might be inheiriting permissions from the parent directory. If so they could connect but do nothing else in that directory.

I have a SMC Barricade myself and had a time setting up ftp...

1. Set up the FTP with a static address.. (don't use DHCP)

2. Make sure the packets can get in and out via whatever ports you choose. Map 21 to 3456 (or whatever your ftp port is on the inside)

I found that SOME people could get into mine no problem, but others could connect, but not get a dir listing.. That was probably the passive transfer issue.

I'd like to know of a way to remove the burden of an ftp client having to toggle the passive transfer and have it just happen. Seamless.

Anyone know?

If it was an IP problem the people on the outside wouldn't be able to login, let alone see anything

How can permission settings be the problem when things are ok using connections from the inside? I hope he has tested this for other than admin-users...
