Network connection problem

I need help here before I go insane !!!

A client has two machines , one Win98SE and one Win95a which are networked via a reversal cable. On the Win95 machine, you start up and no network found. No username.password box appears. If I shut down and log on as a different user, the password box appears , I can enter any name I like and a password. When I click OK, BINGO!! network appears.
I then shutdown. Restart the machine and back to same problem. I've deleted all profiles and .pwl files but still no luck.
I turn to thee, o great advisors of WinDrivers, for a solution to my dilemma.

Sounds like you have it set to automatically log on. It's been a long time since I've used Win95, but in Win98, you did this through Control Panel->Users and Passwords. Look around in there and make sure that you check a box called "Users must enter a name and password to use this computer."

Along these same lines, if you goto Start--Find, then find *.pwl , it will bring all of the password list files on the PC. Rename the extension on all of them, restart the PC, and it should prompt you for a new login; just create one then. I don't remember if 95 uses profiles, if so and you are using them, let us know. You want to follow different instructions then.

Did all that but no prompt to logon.It seems that a default user is being used, but I can't find it anywhere.When the default is logged on, there is no prompt to change password in Control Panel.When I log off and log on as different user, it is there. This is really weird and I'm bald enough as it is!!!!

Do your networking properties specify a network login as the initial login or does it indicate a straight boot into windows? (Network Properties / Configuration / check the drop down list)

It's simple enough to overlook. I've done so often enough <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0">

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am pleased to say...PROBLEM SOLVED. I followed the advice of a well-known techie here and did the following:

format c: ( and, after a while y )

Beleive it or not...the problem went away.

Seriously, after an Fdisk/format and reload I was able to set things up properly and it is working as it should.
