Changing Subnet Mask on a VPN Connection

I am trying to hook a laptop running WinME into a network via a VPN connection. I have hooked a Win98 and a Win2000pro machine up, so I believe the server running the VPN is set up correctly. The Laptop connects and authenticates but no resorces are available. When I run winipcfg it has valid IP but a subnet of 255.0.0.0. Which is not correct. When I go into Start/Settings/Control Panel/Network the TCP/IP setting for Dial-up #2 (VPN Support) Does not have a tab to enter a static IP, Subnet Mask, Gateway. When I go into the properties on the VPN Dial-up connection, on the networking tab, under TCP/IP button I can enter a static IP but not a subnet Mask. I am guessing I will need to edit the registry for this but cannot find it in there. After 5 1/2 hours on the phone with Microsoft Tech support They gave up and said they didn't think it could be changed. :mad: This has to be controlled somewhere. Anyone know where?

Where are you leasing the IP from? The DHCP server should give you an IP and subnet mask that is correct if you are leasing the IP from the place the VPN is at. I would try changing the dial up to use the DHCP of the network you are connecting to (if you can).

I started out trying to let DHCP do the assigning and got the same resault. An IP address in the correct range and a subnet of 255.0.0.0, Even though DHCP has assigned the other 20 workstations on the network correct IP and subnets of 255.255.255.0. That is why I wanted to go and assign a static IP and subnet in WinME. This is what I did for the Win98 machine which is working. As for this machine I got PO-ed, wiped it out and installed Win2000. I still would like to know if this is possible with ME. Has anyone hooked an WinME machine to a VPN?

On Win98 under network settings, I can click on the TCP/IP settings for the "Dial-up Access - Microsoft VPN" (something like that)connection and it has the traditional spot at the bottom of the first tab to select "let it be assigned..." or to put in a static IP, Subnet and Gateway. On the WinME under network this tab is not there, and under the dial-up connection settings there is only a spot for a static IP.
