no linkage!
i recently found and old puter in my garage and i've been attempting to network it. for some reason, it's not working. there's no link being formed between the computers. when they're plugged together, the nics used to light up to show there was a link and now nothing. both computers will link to my dsl modem though. any ideas why they would be able to connect to that and not to eachother?

You have to use a crossover Cat5 cable to link PCs together without using hubs or switches.

i think the wire i'm using is cat5. don't remember for sure. i know that it used to work with my old setup though. maybe it would work if i hooked it up to a hub?

It would if you hooked it up to a hub. But like adept said you need to use a crossover cable if you are going to link them directly to each other.

i've used the cable to hook the puters up directly before...oh well though, you guys would know more than me. that's why i'm the one asking the questions...anyways...off to pick up a hub. i'll let you all know if it worked or not.
