Lan/Modem connection
Hi all, I have a Dell inspiron 4000 here which is running Win2k, 128Mbram and a 3com dual nic/modem card. It also is running Office2k and using Microsoft Outlook. When it is connected to the net via the modem it can send/recive email no problem. When it is connected via the Lan it cannot find the POP3 server ie: mail.bigpond.com. Yet it can see the entire network and printers, connect to other pc's/servers and surf the web. The user has admin rights so I dont think it is a permissions problem and the mail connections are set to auto detect connection. Weird huh.
Any idears why it is doing this???
Thanks in advance.

If you have a proxy server on yer network, make sure the proxy client is installed. You can surf the web without a client if you punch the numbers into IE or netscape, but pop3 doesn't work like that. Also you need the client for access control, so if there are any limitations on access control on the proxy server, the client will verify that you have rights and stuff.

We are running a proxy, this pc does not have it installed, but can surf the net without any worries just using the http address or ftp. All the other pc's are set the same and have no issues like this one does.
any other ideas?

Try using the IP address of your pop3 server instead of its alias
If that works, you got a problem somewhere with the box reading the alias of IP addresses. Without knowing if you have DNS set up correcly, it's difficult to help.
Good luck

try "telnet mail.bigpond.com 25" from the command-prompt...
If you get any ASCII respond from the mail-server you have a configuration problem in your mail-client...
If it times out try "telnet ip-adress 25"... if that works you have possibly a DNS configuration problem...
If nothing works... possibly port 25 is blocked and you can't connect through your proxy with SMTP/POP3... try another mailserver to verify

Thanks lowland and ???, the IP's work ok, the alias name won't.
I will try the telnet command and see what I get.
Thanks all.

you havea DNS problem..
you're DNS servers are probably configured to the ISP and not to the LAN DNS and ISP..
make sure you have all the DNS servers properly..
