I have one pc hooked to a verizon adsl and works good stable. I want to hook up 3 more pc's. I understand the DSL I have uses PPPoe and I don't have a static IP addr. I am looking at a linksys router they tell me i need to do this. Can someone brief me how to configure for all to access the DSL. I can setup the pc's to network fine with my hub. I just need to know how and what to config. to get to use the DSL. They sent winpoet software from verizon. Help Please Thanks
You won't need the winpoet software. The Linksys router will handle the multiple IP's. Basically what you do is connect the DSL modem to the WAN port on the Linky, and plug the uplink port on the Linky to your hub. Set all of your pc's to receive IP via DHCP. Open up your web browser and type in 192.68.0.1 (I think that's the default addy for the Linky) there is no user name but the default password is admin. Change this immediately. Anyway, configure the linky with the information you got from verizon and that should be it. I don't think I'm forgetting anything, but someone will fill in the blanks if I did.

there's an "option" to set the router to the mac address of the NIC, the adsl co. will have recorded this info (if they're like my isp!) and the router needs to take on this identity for you to be able to log on from any machine. I've got 3 on my network and it works a treat.

We use the Linksys for all DSL installs we do, although we have used the Kingston 4-port for installs that the computers are not currently networked at!
(Which I guess we won't be doing anymore since Kingston is jumping out of the networking business!)
Default ip for your linksys is 192.168.1.1. If you know the primary and secondary ip addresses for the closest server of your isp, and default server name (ie: pacbell.net), then you activate your DNS configuration in NETWORK PROPERTIES/TCP.IP/DNS tab on each machine. Use the isp server name as your DNS server domain name, enter the ip addresses under DNS Server Search Order (primary first), you should be good to go. You can call your computer name (Host) anything you want, doesn't matter. Works best w/router running as DHCP server. Your ISP should happily provide you with that info.

Anyway, yes, Linksys is your best choice. Buy a router, depending on how many ports you need, plug in all the computers to it, plug in the DSL modem, and you'll be ready to go.

Also Linksys released the BEFN2PS4 4 port switch / DSL Router with VOICE OVER IP - you can plug in a standard telephone (via - RJ-11) and using Net2Phone - make long distance telephone calls from your linksys router - as well as recieve calls with the new Net2Phone incoming calls feature. Looks cool - I may try it myself.
I dont quite know the reason for you needing a router if you're on a network, but i have used comsocks to distrubute adsl, and it works fine! Routers are sooooo expensive!
I was looking at the Linksys, too. I ended up with the Netgear router/switch. It has worked great (although I haven't tried anything interesting on it yet, like a VPN). And at $70, you can't lose. You might take a look at this one, too.
