wow I guess if that was an alien and they were ganna attack we would have lost :(
Hell if this was in the movies they would of spotted this thing months ago. Tracked it orbit and asked someone to wake the president who would then send up a bunch of people to plant a nuke on which would fail to destroy the chunk of rock. Then just as its about to crash into earth.....wait this movie has already been made damm.
I wonder what would happen in a "Armageddon" situation?

I think I'll paint a target on my roof to make sure that when we all go, I can go fast and painless..... :p
My astronomy professors made sure to point out to us in class that this happens all the time - it's just not publicized. There's nothing we could do about something hitting us anyway. :eek:
Coming from inside and behind the earth orbit, the chances of a hit are pretty small and the chance that it wouldn't be burned up(on a slow orbit) are smaller...the chances of the particle getting through the atmosphere and killing anyone are smaller again.
I'd be more scared about a high speed asteriod coming from further out in the solar system.
