LG combo drive

Anyone else having trouble with the £80 drive from PC World or Dixons in the UK? I can play Mortal Kombat Annihilation but The Phantom Menace plays badly. Its like it cannot read the disc.

Maybe this is why the drive is so cheap in those shops. Even the cd reading ability is not good.

yup ...had the same prob with a couple of my customers , who a: were stupid enough to by "mini" towered tiny/time machines and b: stupid enough to go to pc world to have a "burner" fitted ,,,

they are a very slow burn/bvd speed ,,,in reality , it would be cheaper to buy an LG 32xXXxXX burner (the 24 + 32 are cheap at the moment) and an artec 16x dvd ,,,,

i,m in preston lancs and just picked a "retail" price list up from a shop (just did some work for em) artec dvd £31.50 and a burner (think LG) £49.95. ,,,,,,take the thing back to pc"hit and ask for a swop/refund or even summot that works ,,,
if ness get yourself a bigger case and go seperates.

1 guy i know got $hagged by P%world ,, they removed his dvd , fitted one of those heaps ,,then installed XP over the top of 98 ,,,

oh ,,i forgot to tell you , it was a celleron (about 300/350) with a 3.2g hard drive and 128 meg mem.

bit tight or what??? ,,,and they forgot to clear 600m of %hit out of the temp dir!!!!

upto seeing this drive in action , I had been contemplating one for my DVD ripping machine ,(dobbin) for simplicity and cost (?),,,,as i read dvd,s slow and burn at 4-8 ,,,,but after seeing it struggle ,,,(about 15secs to accnolage a disk) ,,i dicided on a "good" qlty DVD and a couple of nic cards to "drag" the mpeg back and burn it else where .

I dont think the "combo" idea is a good one .

I thought you put it well!

BUT in answer to the q -I think the cause lies elsewhere I have returned a lot of these LG combo drives lately, 20 out of 20 last week, so I think they are a no no(Not NooNoo SHE is of course completley different! :D ), however since your drive reads some but not other disks then is it not more likely dirt or a scratch?? :confused:

and to add to this ,,,,,"maplins" have now started keeping the "grinding" paste to clean cd,s ,,,,,

they open at 11.00am ,,,,,

so down to morrisons ,to get the cooked chicken , for sunday dinner then maplin,s to pick the leads up tor my new "black box" "serve switch" ,,,,owch they are dear (a lot of money) ......

Maybe the Phantom Menace discs are scratched. They only have faint scratches. Should I be able to get a replacement from the publisher? It is only a few months old. I'm going to buy some cd wipes.

I'm planning to try DVDflector which is a stick on film that repairs and protects dvd's. Has anyone had success with these things?

Ordinary white toothpaste, just a little smeared into the scratches should be enough to hold it while you burn a back up copy... worked for me after my daughter scratched her toy story cd.

People get amused, but I use WD40 on scratched cdrom disks. Silicone fills in the scratches, and WD40 cleans the disk as well.

No honestly I've tried it - sometimes it does, I'm not sure about wd40 - oil? it'll clean it but fix it? - perhaps if Noo Noo told it .....:D ;)

I actually think the stuff produced by Time/Tiny/PC World eMachines is great.
Its terrible quality, badly thrown together, frequently goes wrong and keeps me very busy sorting out the mess when the poor owners find me from Yellow Pages to fix things.
BTW.... I fix at least two or three Tiny machines a week where the psu has failed just after the PCs first birthday.
150 Watt for a PIII machine........hmmmmmmmm... not surprising really is it.
As for the combo drives, they are just an accident waiting to happen.

Was that all a bit too cynical???
