Well, if the phone support is paying close to what your getting, then i'd do it. If however your current job at mom & pop is going well, stay there.
Hard choice. I'm currently working phone support and it's a very stressfull job, I'm looking forward on moving on later.

A couple of things spring to mind, they may want you to either prove yourself or gain more hands on experience.
Did they give any indication weather this was standard practice for the job you applied for and if the prospects in the company are good after this "breaking in" phase or even if there is a time limit or "early release" from this part of the job ?
Are there frequent promotions available for those willing to put themselves out or is it just a stop gap posting?
Do they have high staff turn over?
Its not the sort of answer anybody else can really give you but I`m sure the techs here will give you as much support as possible.
Best of luck if you do take the job and keep you nose to the grind stone.

They said that it was normal for them to put some one new in phone support or in a job were that person goes out and changes bad cards in a computer or reinstalls the os on a computer. The pay is a .50 higher than the current job that i have now but the job that i have now has very few benfits. other than the free beer friday night thats about it. we get some vacation time but not a whole lot.

If you, taking all things into consideration, consider it a step up and the prospects look good then go for it.

I would say better benefits (health, dental, vacation) added to the experience of working in a larger company are probably worth the 50 cents. If you are not strapped for cash I would say go for it. Phone support isn't always bad. I know some MSCE's in my company that have been doing level 2 phone support for years and love it. They are every bit as capable as the field techs, they just prefer to work in an office setting rather that be on the road.
