Keeping my fingers crossed

I've been having a helluva time getting my DSL to work since I signed up and received the hardware. I've come to the conclusion that PPPoE is crap. So my friend is coming over with a router. And if this router works for me, then I'm going to be stoked! I sure hope it works. Anyway, my other problem is that the phone jack in my room seems to be jacked (haha,.. funny pun). So to fix all my problems, I'm thinking of getting <a href="http://www2.warehouse.com/product.asp?pf%5Fid=DEB2998&blind=no&cat=networkin g" target="_blank">this.</a> It's the Linksys Etherfast Wireless AP+Cable/DSL Router W/4-Port. What do you guy's think? Sound like a good deal? Or is there an even cheaper route I could take? BTW,.. wasn't sure where to post this thread, so I just stuck it here in the lounge.

Score! That looks schweeeeeeet. I am using a Linksys at home, 4 port cable router, its not wireless, but it has been real stable for me. It then feeds in to a 12 port 100 base switch... :D But all in all, I have been real happy with it. Why wouldnt I be though, it gives me network access on the porch...in the jacuzzi! :D Yeah, sick I know! :(

BUT...I need all those ports for when my friends come over for what we refer to as..."GeekFests" :D

Check <a href="http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=282388&tabtype=rb" target="_blank">CompUSA </a> first, they have one for 179.00. Then go <a href="http://www.linksys.com/wheretobuy/promo.asp?prid=7" target="_blank">here </a>for a 20.00 rebate. I got one a few weeks ago for 150.00 when they were on sale. The only probelm I had is when my cable provider changed my IP, It took a while for the router to pick it up. After I d/l'ed the new ROM I didnt have anymore trouble, so when/if you get it d/l the new ROM

I've been using a Linksys Etherfast 4switch cable/DSL router (BEFSR41) for almost 2 years now and have never had a problem with it. If you're looking for a less expensive alternative, I highly recommend it (pricewatch showed most listings for it under $100). But if the wireless is your thing, go for it! That router looks sweet, but besides the cost of it, you also need to buy special PCI card. I'm guessing with the exception of the wireless/non thing, pretty much all the other features will be pretty much the same with either one.

Ar! One thing after another. I ended up getting just a Linksys router. No built in switch (since I already have a hub) and no wireless. It turns out that the wireless unit I described above is roughly $200.00 +/- $20.00. Then I also will need to get the wireless nic's (I need 2 at least). So that's almost $400.00. So the one I got today was $70.00 altogether.

Anyway, the good news is that DSL finally works. Well that is if I want to just use it in the kitchen. In order for me to make it work in my room, since I didn't get the wireless, means I'll have to run a cable somehow. I'm probably going to have to crawl around under the house. The phone jack in my room just doesn't want to cooperate. Don't really know why, and I can't really afford to pay PacBell $100.00 to fix it either.

So right now I'm on 56K, but at least I do have the DSL running in the house. So at least that's some good news. Ar! Seems like it's very easy for everyone else, but I always get to run into fun obstacles whenever I want to do something cool. :D

w00t! I just discovered that I forgot about a friend who does phone-line installation, repair, etc. So hopefully he'll come over tomorrow and fix my damn jacked jack for free.

Go with the Linksys wireless router, dude. I have a Linksys router and wireless hub (seperate) and I love it. No lost connections or stupid authentication probs like I had with PPPoE.

Go for it!

Anyone actually know what those DSL phone line filters do? Not something that worries me as I'm not involved with line setup at work but it'd be nice to know. :)

They filter out the DSL frequencies so you don't get all the noise and garbage when you pick up a phone that's on the same line.
