Urgent Help needed!!!

I just bought a new cd writer yesterday. I have already burned 4 cds without any probelems. Today when I tried to burn cd it said there was an error. It said either the cd is scratched or damaged or it cannot handle the writing speed. at first i thought the speed was the problem since i have a 10x writer and the cds are 8x. But if this was so than I wouldn't have been able to burn those other cds. I don't what hasgone wrong. The writer drive is brand new. Please help. Also, usually when i put in a blank cd the HP cd burner screen pops up to notify you that there is a blank cd present. Now it doesnt do that anymore. I really dont know whats wrong. Is it the cds or drive. I dont think its the cds cause I tried 4 different cds, same problem. Maybe a cord came loose or something...

What model of HP is it? is it internal or external? Is there another device on the IDE cable (if it's internal)? Does the drive show up in 'My Computer'?

Sounds like a loose cable, but the drive wouldn't show up at all.

May be worth taking back to the supplier.

It sounds like that the program that pops up (im assuming DirectCD) isnt loading at start up anymore. Perhaps the software has become corrupted somehow. Uninstall the software that came with the writer, restart, and re-install it again. If that doesnt help, check all of your cables, although if you havent been throwing your computer around I don't see how it could have just come loose overnight.

You should us 12x or better media for your 10x burner. The 8x media may work but is not sure fire to do so. Get better media and most of the problem should go bye bye. :cool:

Just tell your burning software to burn at 8x, 6x, or slower until you find a speed that works reliably with the supply of blank media you have. If they won't burn at any speed, then you will need to start troubleshooting the drive itself.
