XP shutdown fix
Dont know if this has been posted or not yet but here goes.
Some pcs seem to be having a problem not shutting down all the way and displaying the "It is now safe to shut down your computer" message. If you get this one possible fix is to go to the device manager and then go to the view button click show hidden devices and you will see another device show up in the list which will have a picture of the windows install logo (looks like a box with cd's beside it) sorry but for the life of me I cant remember what it is called. but enable it and tada! It will now shut all the way down.

I did that, but looked through Device Manager and can not find the icon you mention...any other ideas, cause I am having that problem now..

I believe he's talking about the option for "NT Apm/Legacy Support", and then "NT Apm/Legacy Interface Node"
You also have to make sure that the Advanced Power Management Support box is checked. (Right click desktop, properties, screen saver, APM.
If this tab does not show, it is because the before mentioned device is not functionally properly (or not enabled) in device manager.

Yeah, I know about the APM in ScreenSaver/Powermanagment. Hoever that Tab doesn't show up..and I definately dont have the NT thingy in my Device Manager...suggestions?

also check services/msconfig for NVIDIA DRIVERS HELP ,,,,and disable if u have a gforce video card

Well, from what I can understand, the tab dosn't show up because the "NT Thingy" is not enabled. Maybe you can force install it. Make sure you have your motherboard drivers installed first, that could be the problem. I'm thinking your problem is caused because the OS isn't recognizing the fact that your computer has the automatic power off feature capability. Maybe it thinks you are using the old AT form facter mobo instead of the newer ATX, which is what differenciated between the auto power off features.

The only mobo drivers I have are the VIA 4in1, I have the MSI K7t266 Pro2. Installed the latest 4in1 drivers..and I'm using winXP Corporate...

I apoligize about the size of the pic, I have a pretty big screen, and I tried to reduce the size, but it lost too much resolution in the text, and I figured, better big and legable, than small and unreadable.

I ran into shutdown problems as well and the only way i got it to shutdown correctly was to remove the SMC nic from the machine and install an intel pro

I have one of those an RU I think? (No onboard raid), did the same with ACPI on/off in bios.
Bios flash cured it.
I don't think the 4-in-1 is too hot yet with xp, 4.36 seems best...but others seem better for some boards.

Has anybody had this problem just pop up??? As in it worked for a while then quit????? I do have all the updates from Microsoft. It worked for a while after that..... Then it just reboots... I will try the other sugestions posted and thanks for the help in advance...

Uninstall WinXP :mad: and install Win2K :D

No, the RU is Raid and USB 2.0..I went to update the bios, but it says that I have the most current bios already, 3.3....

Mess around with the options for power management in your bios. Do you have them turned off? If so, turn them all on. See if that helps.
