[RESOLVED] Installation Nightmare!!!!

Installing windows xp Home, clean install on a new computer

MB Chaintech 7AIV5, Via KM133A chipset, on board Video(shared memory), and sound

CPU Thunderbird 1.4 266 fsb

Memory 256MB 2 modules Samsung 128MB 16x64 PC 133

HD Maxtor Diamond 40GB Partions 2 19GB Fat32

50x cd-rom, Lite-ON 24x10x40 CD|RW


Installation locks up. Somtimes I would get an error message suggesting that I turn off rom shadowing in the bios. I did that the first time I read it. Didn't stop it from doin it again.
I re-started it over and over, it got a little further each time. Until setup finally finished.

Except It locks up all the time(HARD LOCK nothing breaks it except the reset button), esspecially when installing programs, no it doen't matter what I try to install. Longest it ran was 20 minutes, unless I was no where near it.

I turned off the onboard video, and put in a AGP card, no difference. Put in different Ram chips no Difference. Installed xp mb, and onboard video drivers, downloaded from chaintech, no difference.

Stumbled accross Event Viewer in Admin tools control panel (does win 98 have this?)

Found dozens of the following error messages under system. The time stamps coincide with the lockups.

I turned of the ACPI feature in the BIOS, and then XP would not start at all!!
So I turned it back on.

This mother board is not on the Microsoft compatibility list for XP, but I didn't think nothing of it. Half the boards I put 98 on were not on it either.

Please don't suggest a re-install, I've sat through it 3 times, locking up the whole way, even tried starting install from a boot disk.

Please HELP! The customer wants his computer last week, and my WIFE is going to kill me cause, I havn't been out of the computer room in 3 days!@

Theres alot of hardware not on the hardwarelist, since the listis old.

Go see if theres a new bios for you motherboard.

Try disabling the sound. And take out everything you can. Everything but display, keyboard and maybe mouse. (dont need a mouse for setup)

:rolleyes: First I would make sure that acpi power controlling is turned off in the bios and then try to reinstall or reboot. :rolleyes:

I had exactly the same problems; XP just would not load and I removed components piece by piece without success. In the end it turned out to be quite simple to fix. I thought I had the latest BIOS update but I hadn't, there was one that I missed. I downloaded the latest patch, flashed the BIOS, re-installed and got perfect results (apart from the usual Microsoft bugs etc).

I tried removing components, I tried different components.

when i turned off the acpi in the bios then xp would not boot at all!

I flashed the bios, yes it was the newest.

nothing worked!

I obtained a Biostar MB that was on the HCL for XP! Installed ALL the same components and fired it up!

Problem solved! It's Running Like a Dream! The customer will be happy, when he gets over it being a week late (I hope).

The first MB was just not meant to run with XP!

I'll throw it on the shelf and when Chaintech posts a new Bios, I'll try it again.

Or throw it back to Chaintech, could be a bad board, I have seen a few bad boards including my Asus tusl2-c , the floppy ocntroller was going
