Microsoft is going to engineer it so that it won't work on a widely-warezed activation key, which as we recall escaped form a large friend of Microsoft beginning with D. It would appear that Microsoft does not intend application of SP1 to vape systems installed using that key, but simply to freeze them where they are, and to block their ability to use Windows Update. Microsoft has used service packs to disable installations it deemed pirated in the past, and we'd guess it's decided not to do this because it might hit legit systems by mistake, or generate adverse publicity from innocent victims.

Won't take somebody long to either come out with a way to bypass the blocked Windows Update, or a sanitized version of SP1.
-
At least they're not going at this with both barrels and acknowledging the possibility of kneecapping legitimate intallations.
Anyone remember the MS Office service packs?
-
hmmmm...I wonder if you could download updates from the corporate update site with a legit install, share out or burn the update and install it on the rogue box that way ?????
-
There is mention in certain Newsgroup forums of changing the XP key via registry hacking to a more suitable one pre SP1 install. Not that anybody here would need to do such a thing............................................. ........... just waiting for a moderator to slap my wrist for mentioning it

So let me get this straight, they are just going to use the sp to block access to the updates? Why not have it disable the os and require some kind of authorization from m$ to allow the os to activate again?
I dont think that disabling service pack installs will stop piracy
-
It just means that those with warez copies won't update.
-
As expected the workaround is easy. The lockdown is for serials starting "FCKGW" only. All im going to say in archer you have got step one of two. Warez users seem to sidestep MS so easily.

If MS tried to deactive OS's, and one of those happened to be a computer controlling a critical life safety system, somebody could get hurt or die. Not exactly good PR for your stock price!

Most people dont use the updates anyway as they sometimes cause more grief than they cure
-
There was mention that they had taken the extreme action before and had come unstuck with legal sabre rattlings from valid users innocently affected so decided to take the lesser evil as a course of action for now and yes 2600,I was trying to indicate a reported course of action without suffreing the mighty Thors hammer of the moderators wrath.
From what I kave read the patch will affect those mention by 2600 and will require them to reregister with MS.
