IRQs

How do I change it so that the IRQs go all the way up to 120+ ? At one time I had my Radeon card at IRQ 128 and and my Sound card at 32..now they back to 0 - 15....help?

In your bios, do you have it set for PIC or APIC?

I cant recall off the top of my head which gives you the extra IRQs, but you cannot changes this without reloading windows.

Try setting "PNP OS" to "YES"

I had AIPC (IAPC or some other combination) enabled, as for the PNP OS I always had that as enabled..

Lycia.. I'm not sure how it was set before, but the way ASPI bios works is that it assigns all cards to IRQ 9 (usualy) wich get's drivers for the PCI steering. The OS then hotshuffles that IRQ to all the needed cards. Personaly, i usualy turn plug&pray off and assign IRQ's manualy.. I finda more stable system in those situations.

From personal experience, ACPI causes a lot of problems with Windows XP. See this thread for info on disabling it.

After disabling ACPI my computer ran a million times better.

Is there a way to change IRQs through Device Manager? The option is there for certain devices under RESOURCES but it's grayed out......d ;)

With a lot of the newer motherboards, there is an option for APIC or PIC. enableing your board for APIC allows for a lot more than 16 IRQs. i was not aware that they could go up to 120+, but it makes sense that it would. Keep in mind this onloy works in NT, 2000 and XP, and if you CHANGE from PIC and APIC, you MUST reinsatll windows. It will not boot up after chaginging it.

You most likely had APIC enaabled at first, but BIOS may have been reset and changed to PIC.

Change to APIC and reinstal your OS.

As for being able to change resources in device manager, disbale PNP OS in the BIOS until after you make the changes you want.

Once you disable ACPI, how do you get it back? I was able to assign IRQs to some devices but now the machine won't shutdown like before. Checked Power Options and there is no APM tab. Already checked the bios setting and IPCA is enabled and APM set to yes....thanks

Just return your Bios to Default Setting!!! <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

The only way I know is to reinstall XP.

So that's the tradeoff. You can assign IRQs but then you lose the ability to powerdown automatically. Oh well....thanks....d ;)

PIC/APIC is NOT THE SAME THING as ACPI! it has NOTHING to do with power management, but the assigning of IRQs. MBs with APIC are relativley new, and in this case, the MB most likely had APIC enabled, and now is set to PIC. with APIC, you CAN have way more than 16 IRQs, but with PIC you are limited to 0-15.

What MB are you using?

I have the MSI K7T266 Pro2...I had APIC enabled in the bios becuase I saw the IRQs up to 128. A few days ago I noticed that it was back to normal IRQ numbers. I went to bios and APIC was still enabled. I have been having some minor problems, I think I may re-install XP anyway..

Now I know why I had irq 23 for my vidoe card under XP home, but in the bios screen at boot it showed it at 11, Win xp would not run right so I went back to Win 98
I am going to check my bios settings of my Asus p4b266 mother board
