Can Windows XP pro act as a dhcp server?

It has the dhcp server and client services, one assumes so!

What did you have in mind ebra?

was going to remove the linux box that I have doing it now at home and see how well xp handles it. The only problem that I have is I don't want to enable internet connection sharing for the cable modem

You don't have to.. does the linux box handle the cable modem sharing then?

It will assign IP's if your using ICS though. if you just want to hand out IP's then you can install a third party app to act as a the DHCP server. If linux is handling it, you may want to keep that, otherwise you'd have to move to windows2000 server in order to get a native DHCP server to hand out just IP's.

If it's a small network, use ICS or assign all systems with a static IP.

The Linux box is handling the dhcp and the cable modem guess I get to stay with that then
