wont defrag
just set up an old p2 350 on no name mobo based on bx440 with old 6Gb west dig HDD, start win98se defrag and it wont get far, says are disk errors but of course scan dsk wont find anything. I have either heard or come accros this b4 but cannont remember what cause is or how to fix. HDD is 2nd hand and had a fat16 on b4 I used fdisk on it (properly) and I think bios can support 8.4 drives. HDD speed finds no errors. Any suggestions?

Have you tried running it in safe mode.

I would also try the following command under DOS-Prompt:
scandisk c: /autofix /surface

You might also try the HD manufacturers test tool here:

hmmmm, left house mate playing on pc for a few hours, got home and hes gone and try to boot pc and its trashed, wont boot properly and when it eventually did it was very unstable. Will try west dig's diag software of course, but hdd speed has helped me diag faulty drives b4 and it returns no probs. Will get back when know more.

I could be off the mark, but sometimes defrag will not start if apps are running in the backround in Windows.

Most likely it is just only few lost clasters on drive occured. They are not hardware-related errors - that's why HDDspeed utility didn't find any errors.
And of course, those errors should be fixed before running Defrag (otherwise Defrag can't be run). It can be done using scandisk, for example, as AlienDyne suggested, from DOS or from Windows box.
Good luck! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
