[RESOLVED] Bus Mastering Problems w/ new motherboard

I recently installed a soyo board, which used ETEQ bus mastering (I think its really just VIA). After installing all drivers from soyo CD and rebooting, the "found new hardware" asks for viadsk.cat, which isnt on soyoCD, windowsCD or my HD. The secondary bus mastering IDE thing will not work w/o this file and I have no CD access. Soyo tech support has not responded to anything I ask.
The latest soyo ETEQ 4 in 1 drivers for says only install the AGP stuff for windows 98 second edition. I have tried the best I can to erase any mention of VIA on my computer, only to come up with windows asking for a PCI IDE controller somewhere. I am stuck w/o a bus mastering device and no CD access, any info would be appreciated.

Load a dos cdrom driver and copy the needed files from the cd to you hard drive in dos. Reboot into safe mode and remove all hard disk controllers from the device manager. Reboot again and let windows redetect the controller and then try an reinstall the bus mastering again.

Might also need to go through and search the registry for noide before you can get out of compatablity hell.

Yeah, yesterday I went through the registry and erased everything from VIA and ETEQ, deleted a few .vxd files for the bus master. After clena reboot it couldnt find a bus master driver, instead under unknown devices in device manager it had PCI IDE controller not installed, but with the big yellow question mark.

* Is there any way to just install the generic IDE drivers? or something?

It sounds like you got rid of the busmastering drivers, now you might need to reinstall Windows to replace any .vxd files that might be missing or corrupted. Reinstalling will also force Windows to redetect your IDE controller.

Here is the cause of the flagged IDE's:

When windows detects your IDE controller, it installs the 32 Bit driver for the Primary channel and reboots. Then, when it boots up next time you will get a big blue screen saying your IDE devices are trying to use an unsupported method of communication. When you reboot again your IDE controllers are flagged.

The fix? Boot into safe mode, then open regedit.

Search for the phrase NOIDE, and delete the entire key from the registry. This setting tells your computer not to bother trying to reinitialize your ide drivers because they caused the computer to stop responding once.

Now, for good measure, go into the device manager and delete the dual ide controller.

Reboot.

Windows will boot up and detect devices, and ask you to reboot. ANSWER NO!!!

It will then install the second IDE driver, then you may reboot your computer and the drivers should be installed ok. E-mail me at [email protected] if this doesn't work or if you have any further questions.

The easiest way, I have found, to get around this problem is to let windows install the bus mastering driver. Then, you will need to go into device manager, goto hard drive controllers and go into the properties of the bus master driver. In here, under driver, you need to change it back to a standard PCI/IDE controller.
