Good ole Western Digital

To make a long story short: Me buy new hdd, me rma hdd 13 days later, me wait 35 days for new drive, me get an extra drive in the mail after i get my replacement.

WD sucks, they lied to me repeatedly and only got around to sending me a replacement drive after more than a month, this being a supposed 9-11 day rma cycle. I notified them 48 hours ago that they sent me an extra drive and they have yet to contact me. As far as I know, I have no legal obligation to mail the drive back to them, doubly so if they won't even follow up on my call. Anybody that knows the letter of the law on this would be most helpful.

I'm keeping the HDD unless I find out I legally can't. Now i just gott go get a RAID card so i can fully appreciate 240 GB of 7200 RPM 8 MB cache goodness.

Damn, I've been running WD's for about 10 years, on average they last 4-5 years.

No problems (yet)...

Honestly, I think a lot of things like this are based on luck.
You just might have bad luck with WD's....

I wouldn't have told 'em.....

I have maxtor and WD drives, haven't had problems with either :D

i would have to agree here! I've had good luck with WD's and when one goes down I've always been taken care of by them. That said, times do change so I suppose it is a possibility that I'll be really upset next time I have to deal with them.

Also my Brother works for the Post Office, if something is sent to you and you did not order it, it is yours to keep and you do not have to pay for it. However I would still check on the legalities of it. Maybe find a lawyer who does first consultation for free... if you want to be sure. The other thing is you did kind of order it, they just sent too many so maybe there is a grey area I'm not sure.

They quality of the drive isn't so much what has me annoyed, as I do accept that from any manufacturer you will occaisionally have a defective drive. What pisses me off is how poorly they run RMAs.

I have had good luck with their RMA department in the past. No problems what-so-ever in fact! It's Maxtor we always have trouble with. Maybe you just got someone on a bad day or something and your request got "lost". It has been awhile since i had to RMA a WD so like I said maybe I'll be unpleasantly surprised! Once again good luck!

I had a couple old WD drive die, but that was a long time ago. I just had a Maxtor 20GB drive start clickin', followed by a refusal to initialize. No matter what I tried, nada. I finally kissed that drive off and bought a WD 80GB drive as a replacement. So far, so good. I requested an RMA from Maxtor a couple days ago...no reply yet. We'll see...

On a side note, I had a Hitachi CM753 19" monitor bite the dust 10 days before the warranty expired. They sent a replacement and I received it less than two weeks later. I had already bought a new Hitachi CM828 19" monitor as a replacement, so I put the 19" on my wife's computer (it had a nice ADI 17" monitor that I boxed up into storage in case one of these babies die again). She is very happy now... :)

I've had good and bad drives from every company: WD, Seagate, Maxtor, and yes, even Quantum (gasp!)

It's a crap shoot.

Slightly off topic, but relating to warranties and RMAs nonetheless.

Lexmark (printers) and AOC (monitors) have consistently impressed me with the quality of their service.

Not unlike Spiff's story, my old 15" AOC Spectrum died - and I mean this - 4 days before the warranty expired. They just took it and replaced it within the week. :eek:

I have wondered what stops people from taking old drives still under warranty and shaking them while they were on until they died and then RMAing them to get bigger drives.

Hmmmm.

There's a little taco hut I get breakfast tacos from near here. When it takes them a long time to get a to go order to you, they stick an extra taco in the bag........similar situation, maybe?:D

this might be out of line, but a lot of those diag programs you can cause an error code if you just TAP the side of the drive when its running it ....

edit :: top of the drive, not the side

Dont bother, in 2k you can run software RAID (built into the OS) and from what I've experienced with it, it uses very little (1-5%) of the cpu and costs alot less :p :D
