What's a Password????

Hi all. And yes I know what a password is. Problem here is I never set any passwords up and now I am being asked for one! Here is my set up. PC no. 1 is running win2000 Pro, PC no. 2 is running win98se. I have a cable modem and use a linksys router and a hub to connect this mess. PC no. 1 can connect to PC no. 2 with full control but PC no. 2 cannot access PC no. 1. Both have complete access to the internet and can ping each other. In network neighborhood on both PC's everything is seen fine. If I click on PC no. 1 from PC no.2 I get a box requesting a password for resource \\"PC no. 1"\IPC$ I have enabled guest account and never entered a password.

What did I miss???????

Windows 2000 has security features

You need to create an account on the 2k machine for the 98 box to use - or if you want to be dangerous, enable the guest account on the 2k machine and share the folders for the guest account.... not recommended.

I would suggest setting the username/password NooNoo is talking about to match the one on the 98box.

There is an example here

edit: I would also suggest actually using a password on the 98 box, but that is another matter. :)

an even easier way is to connect as the administrator...here's how:

Connect as:

Username: computername\administrator
Password: duh.

give it a shot. I used to have problems connecting to shared resources from computers that were not logged on to the network (esc'ed 9x boxes or local admins on NT types) until I realized that you have to put in your full username (i.e. domain\username) and password for the machine to know where to look for password authentication...

No need to create new account(s) - the machine isn't logging into a domain server, just a shared resource. As long as the 2k box can authenticate that someone who is authorized access to the folder is trying to access (and the administrator can always access shared resources unless specified otherwise in permissions) there is no need for extraneous accounts. In this case though, now that I think about it...if he is letting his wife/gf have access to his MP3's or something, he should probably create a regular local user account for her, instead of letting her have the password that will let her see all the p0rn he's hiding from her. :D
