When booted and that screen shows select file then hold down ctrl key and select close.
check to see if it is opening in your startup:
Try looking in the start menu under all programs > startup
Go to run
type msconfig
go to the startup tab
look through there and see if it is listed and uncheck if it is.
We have had a similar problem with our NT kernel based machines in our unit (USMC) Most will open up the folder c:\winnt\system32 upon startup...and it's not in the startup sequence. The only solution I have found is to wipe and reload. Perhaps there are other ways, but it's hard to research them when a LtCol says he wants "That D@#& thing to stop it NOW LCpl!!!"
i am not going to reload just to stop the folder from loading up!! its way to much work just for one little thing.
isnt there a registry tweak to stop the folder?
Try setting explorer back to default As shown here at the bottom of the page
It may not stop explorer from opening on startup, but I would like to know if it still insists on opening the common folder. This would indicate something is trying to run.
Have you checked in the regestry under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run (RunOnce, RunOnceEx, Setup)
It might be there it might not.
What programs have you installed lately? I had an old program do this to me with program files because it couldn't read the space in between the program and the file and it would always open up a newly created c:\program directory.
no luck

Thanks, idontno, removing the folder is indeed an acknowledged solution, although it may be a little late for the folk in 2002. :)
Of course it may assist someone else in the future.
Re-naming the folder first is a safe, reversible practice in case removing it makes something go wrong. And please don't anyone interpret the suggestion to mean delete the Common Files folder...
Sorry Platypus, I should have been a little more specific. The reason I deleted it was because there is never anything in it.
Seems to me I also had this issue and i determined it was some software from installing an HP printer that did it.
I never did sort out how to stop it, but I am pretty sure it was from a HP printer install
The funniest thing of all is the fact that I got an email to let me know I got a reply to my post :P
Heh, we like to keep you informed... :)
