No dos mode in Windows 98 se

This is strange, I had the shutdown issue with a fairly fresh install of Win 98 se
I installed the hard drive cache patch, Still hangs so I installed the shtdown supplement
It shuts down fine now, restarts fine, But when you want to restart in MS dos mode it goes to a black screen and just sits there, I could not use the ctrl+alt+delete, I had to hit the reset switch
Once we replaced a faulty floppy drive I could use the ctrl+alt+del to restart the system
SO all is fine unless you want to restart in MS dos mode
I can open a dos window and use the mem command, the ver command
They system is AMD based

a7v333 board
Athlon xp 2000+
Volcano 9 cooler
His video card
SB live 5.1 on it's own IRQ in pci slot 4
256 megs of brand name ran ddr 2100
300 watt psu
Win 98 SE

Funny you should say that....

Duron 800 in a Gigabyte 7IXe4 mobo - bios ver F9
ata133 maxtor 80gig hdd
Radeon 7200VE
PCI512 SB
1394 firewire controller
3com 10/100 nic
320 mb pc100 ram
and

Promise controller card - which I think is the suspect here.

Are you running your hdd from the onboard ide or from a controller card?

I've seen this, normally a reinstall doesn't take care of it, so if you plan on trying it, I'd do it on another drive first.

You should be able to do the f8 thing to get the boot menu and go in that way...

The easiest way to get around this is to delete (or rename) the copy of command.com that's in the \windows directory, then delete (or rename) the .PIF files that are in the \windows directory. The first time you attempt a shutdown/restart in MS-DOS mode, it should work.

Let me know if this fails to do the trick . . . I've written some startup files & .PIF files that should solve this, and I can email 'em to you

I had this happen before and it ended up being that a setting in the bios to supply an irq for the display adaptor(something like that anyway) fixed it. It was set to no and I told it yes and problem solved.

There is no additional controller card in the PC and no optional raid, Just your basic setup
I did try to replace the command.com files, When I am over at his house I will try the pif files. I never thought af that
I don't think it has the option of IRQ for vga since it is a newer bios.
What is the problem with Via chpsets assigning three devices to IRQ 11
I did a card shuffle and I think there are only three devices on 11 now, That is why I run an Intel platform At least they keep the display adapter on it's own IRQ :eek2:

Via chipsets don't necessarily - Windows does make them share. You should also know that most pci slots share an irq with an onboard device and most manuals have a table showing what slot shares with what so you can - to a certain extent determine the best slot for your cards.

Well the a7v333 shows three devices on the post screeen when you boot up, One is a usb controller and the other is the display but I can't remember what the third is
I never ran into that problem on my p4b266 , Good stable board
If I only knew how to rewrite the bios software :eek2:

If windows runs of course you can get DOS mode.....

So you mean when you ask it to re-start in dos mode it just sits there after post, but starts normally otherwise?

Ain't that just some crap in Dosstart.bat (what 98 runs to give you command prompt)? You can prove this to yourself by re-booting without asking for dos mode restart then press F8 a million times a second just after post you then get a boot menu, if it'll do this, then there is some value in Dosstart.bat that's preventing propper boot.

Shut down is fine and restart is fine. restart in MS dos mode gives me a black screen so I have to give it the three finger salute to force a reboot
I may try some idead here when I visit my friend then post the results

Thanks, I've been playin' with a machine on the bench for a couple of days tryin to find the problem, now I feel daft :sad: :rolleyes:

I am really surprised no one mentioned the most common cause of this exact issue.

Disable the option in your antivirus program that scans your floppy drive on shutdown or reboot.

99% of the time i have seen this problem, this is the fix.

And? Can you start in 'real' real mode(dos using f8?) if you can its dosstart.bat, does dos even know what an irq is?....
