Its a very old unit a 486dx100 and it was working fine then it just stops seeing the hard disk so I go into bios and auto detect and its fine for a bit then it happens again. Any ideas? I think its the board personally I have run hdd diagnostics and can as yet find no errors....
is the hard drive controller on-board or a daughter card?
try an ISA/VESA I/O card and see if it does the same?
also, possibly battery dying? I have seen simular problems on p2 systems, replaced the battery and it was fine..

How old is the hd? Maybe you can se the bios to have a delay before it detects the hd.

cheers folks, should have realised that myself but didnt notice any defaults loaded etc message. BTW there isnt a battery in their that looks like any mobo battery I've come accross b4, I've obviously seen the new type ones and the old barrel ones but unless I'm mistaken this one looks like a voltage reg with a clip on top???? Do they still make these and whats it called???? Or am I being stuipied and it is actually a voltage reg with a clip on top :( :D

Many 486 m/boards had the battery hidden inside a black block chip made by names like Dallas, Houston or Odin, which provided the CMOS and RTC functions.

What you describe otherwise may indeed be a voltage regulator.
Ok cool, I was just being daft, well I'd never seen a battery like this b4, anyway its one of those Benchmarq Batteries thats a little shorter than a 32 pin dip bios chip. Its full title is

Now theres no way its worth buying one from resource800 as its such an ols board so I will look around uk.
So if I understand this device is called a 'Smart battery' ?

Yeah, Benchmark RTC chip is one of those Dallas RTC chip clones... There is no point to spend money on that outdated anyways motherboard unless you can take simillar RTC chip out from and old 286 - 586 dead motherboard...:rolleyes:
I have read also somethere on forums, what one guy took out dead battery from that chip (using a file (what made from metal :D )), and connected an external battery... I usually have enough RTC chips laying in my spare parts box, so, I haven't tried that method yet...:D ;)
By the way, I've just received few my PLCC32-to-DIP32 converters - let me know, if you still need one... ;)
Thanks ruslan, yep I shall try to salvage one from another board, I think I would like to use the unit as a hardware firewall if I ever get the cash for broardband at least :) Anyway yes I would love a cclp-dip converter as I have a chaintech scktA board that stalls during post so fingers crossed! Let me no the cost for post and whatever you want!
