I have a problem :(
I have a win2k server that is a telnet server as well for a program we use. The workstations use terminal emulation software over telnet which works fine. But when it comes to file sharing or even sometimes logging on the network the connection fails, but the terminal emulation still goes on without a hitch. Any ideas or suggestions to try?
It sounds like it is a hardware issue.
If you have a dodgy NIC in the server or perhaps a faulty switch or cabling then you can have all sorts of problems.
In your case the terminal software could be working ok because it transfers a small amount of data. However, file sharing and even logging on transfers significantly more.
For example last week my friend brought round his laptop and connected to my ADSL connection.
Browsing worked fine but when he tried to do downloads or file sharing things screwed up.
When we changed to a PCMCIA NIC everything worked fine.
I would suggest starting with the NIC and cable connected to the server and then move on from there if the problem persists.
I thought it was the NIC at first as well, I replaced the NIC (actually 2 different ones just to make sure) but no go. I then looked at the cabling which is a nightmare of a job (previous guy cabled the place). They ran some temporary runs to test it out. It was a little better but still the same problems. I then went on the server the other day and was checking every setting. One thing that I noticed was that DHCP was misconfigured. It was resident on a disabled NIC. So, I switched the service to the good NIC and authorized it and put in some new settings. Everything seems to be working decently now, but time will tell.
Can you ping the box by hostname and netbios name? What OS can't connect 98, 2000, NT?
