My network Places
When I click on "my network places" icon in win xp pro, the window pops up but then I get the little flashlight (like it is looking for computers) but it takes up to 30 seconds sometimes. I have tried two different nics, one is brand new, but they both do the same thing. I know I can just type in the name of the pc and get there instantly, but I still want to be able to browse the network sometimes. ? I am running a small peer to peer network at my house (when my gaming buddies come over) and we are all on static ips (192.168.0.X range). Does anyone know why it might be doing this?

It could be XP's love of giving you every piece of info it can.. it will hunt for all possible network connections... which includes ftp sites, it will look for printers attached and so on... open my computer, tools, folder options, view... uncheck automatically search for network folders and printers... also you may wish to disable offline files.
XP will helpfully reset it back from time to time, just be firm and uncheck it again
:D

you might also want to install netbeui. its a little bit chatty and not really neccessary but it might help you find the other boxes quicker. its not as easy to install in xp as you wont find it listed under protocols in your network properties, but is on the xp cd. unfortunately, i dont have one in front of me right now,but it might be under the "third party" folder about 3 layers down. HTH.
