large disk support?
Issue:
I just bought an external 200gb drive and can only see 128gb in disk manager...
Note:
I have SP3 and all updates installed
I already did this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;q305098
Any ideas?
Update: Apparently I need a "48 Bit LBA translation" driver or some such. I am having no luck in tracking this down....

What does the bios see it as?
Have you partitioned it? If so, what with?
-
After you have given NooNoo the info I believe the next step may be to try flashing the BIOS.
If you have partitioned it, just format the second partition and you'll get the full capacity of the drive.
Have a good day. :)

AFter I looked at it again I realised I missed the most important word
EXTERNAL
So how is it connected? Firewire?
I would be looking at the manufacturer site faq's about the driver for it.

USB2 and I checked out the manufacturer (Western Digital) and they have nothing. The disk they sent with the drive is a DOS boot disk so there is no support for USB and the drive cannot be seen by the disk utilities. My BIOS is not the issue since the drive is on a USB2 PCI Card, narrowing it down to a Windows issue. I have the same issue when I try connecting it to my Windows XP Pro machine....
-
OK, lets look at the usb2 drivers. Who made the card? Have you used the default windows drivers? Is it a via or a TI chipset?
-
The USB2 Contoller is made by BusLink and I am using their drivers for it. There are a few posts out there on other sites that indicate that this is a Windows "feature" or maybe a USB "feature":

I tried that. I also sent a message to WD and Buslink. Hopefully they have a patch. Otherwise I am screwed ouf of some serious disk space...hehe.

Well it turns out that USB2 has a limitation of 128GB. I purchased a Promise Ultra TX2 ATA100 Controller and took the 200GB drive out of the USB2 encasing. I can see and use the full 200GB. I put a 120GB drive in the USB2 encasing. I hope my pain and agony will help others avoid it.
-
Ouch... where did you find that nugget of information?
-
Ya'd think manufacturers would look into these things....
-
Buslink sent me an email....
I had my suspicions about it since the problem is widespead and I couldn't find any way to get around it.
It could be why WD never sent me a reply...
