Why?

Why in god's name do people 'mod' cases?

You're going to say the same reason people 'mod' cars right?

OK, I'll make my standpoint clear - I modify cars, normally by starting with the mechanical bits and working my way out, not by sticking some blue LED's on and dropping the suspension.

Difference being, I modify cars to make them go faster, or handle better, not to look gay.

But then I can see why people mod cars, at least you can make them look like they go fast (even if you actually take a couple of seconds off the 0-60 time by weighing them down with a great big f'off spoiler and a load of carbon-fibre look plastic.

But then, at least cars go places, and people can see what you've done - PC's on the other hand, sit at home, where no one really sees them in person.

Other thing is, I've heard debate that some case-mods can affect the PC's functionality. Take a black-light strip, these create inference on a similar frequency to a CPU's clock speed. PC's are in steel boxes for a few reasons, one of which is it keeps out interference. Cutting a hole in it will negate some of this effect. Also worthy of note - perspex is a really bad conductor of heat.

And one last thing....

When people 'mod' things to give them an indvidual look - why the hell do they all end up looking the same? Take cars - LED screen washers, single, central wiper blade, lower it, alloy wheels with as few spokes as possible. PC's paint it, cut a window in the side, put a light in.

Ahem, in defense (and a bit of offense while I'm at it):

One of the biggest avenues of modding is improving cooling. Adding fans, rounding cables, planning airflow are all common points. As for lighting and windows, you want to show off work and money that went into your system. And why do you assume the PC sits at home? A great majority of case modders are also regulars at LAN parties. We like to show our creativity off. You obviously don't think much of case modding to begin with, so this link is probably wasted but anyways: Cool Case Gallery. Case modification is on the same curve as car modification, lots of generic with some truly amazing stuff.

As for your 'legitimate' car modding: Oooo, you can drop ridiculous mounts of money on upgrades that you will get ticketed for using. Do I need to tell you how many morons in front wheel drive POSes I see with spoilers bolted on each and every day? Not to mention the general attitude of this crowd of *** clowns. Never have I had to worry about a case modder sending me off a road because he's trying to make up for some random inadequacy.

So in a simple phrase; shove off. Why bother flaming? Not like you would be bound to find much support in a forum titled 'Case Mods and Cooling'.

and I also get bored and I like being creative and it's something fun to do,I am a "tinkerer",,I tinker in the garage and also I am doing a mod to my 10 year old son's box now because when you're 10 it's way cool to have a flourescent green case with batman fans grills on diode lighted fans!

it's fun and the cooling part is very functional for my oc'ed boxes,which 2 are.

Cooling - yeah I'll give you that one, so long as it's justifiable and not "look how many fans I got". Don't get me started on overclocking, just don't. Accepted, somethings are cool when you're 10 (does this prove my case? :)).

Cutting back to the cars. Making em go quick is more down to skill and time than what you can bolt on. All the modifications I have done on my last truck are road legal (haven't got the Nitro in yet ;)).

Going on to spoilers, I'm with you there jaeger, utterly useless for most purposes. On the track, over 80, they start to become useful, at which point all downforce is good downforce, makes less slide. Whether your average car modder would ever take their car on the track seriously is a different question, as is whether they have the skills to keep up with the looks.

I think it's a little hypocritical of you to say that it's ok to mod cars but not pc's because cars go places?

I suppose it's like anything,,

you know what they say! different strokes,for different folks,

some poeple mod motorcycles,

some bicycles,,

some paint their homes,

some do cars,

some do their yards,

some people do pc cases,

whats the real difference anyway?

if people do what makes them feel good,then whats the harm?

doing some custom mods to a case and making it look good is a skill also,some people like you and I are good with our hands,if you're good with your hands and are creative then I consider that a skill ,no matter what you are doing.

modding cars is not for me,I like good gas mileage and easy to smog cert,the technology on my cars is just the way I like it,but I don't look at you in a bad light or tell you it's silly for modding your car,I think it's cool that you do that.

my g/f and i have adopted a greyhoud/lab mix dog, who has no body fat, weighs about 45 lbs and is bald on his belly....we got him a sweater to keep him warm. we live in maine...temp right now is 10 deg... (current sebago temp)(current sebago temp)

not to be a dink, but some dogs need it...

My ultimate PC would be in the most battered, uninteresting and greyist looking box imageinable. Yet when you switched it on it would just be the dogs b*****s!!! It's what's inside that matters. Currently I have the outside but not the inside :D

It's the same with cars and me, I would ultimately like the most boring and normal looking car on the road, yet under the hood would be a beast capable of wiping out anything that wanted to race me! I like to surprise people.

However there is definately something to be said for computers that look good. Why do you think Apple Macs have had a revival of fortune since their new image, and are the only type of computer ever shown in films and on TV??
