For those who may not know this, Maxtor bought out Quantum a while back, and they are now packaging Quantum drives in Maxtor boxes. I know because I bought 2 Maxtor 40gb for my wife's computer, and they both have a Quantum label on them. POST detects them as Quantums as well. Just an FYI
And the Quantums are POS <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
IMHO...So are Maxtors. But I will take Maxtor over Quantum any day. Hopefully, Quantums get better and not Maxtors getting worse. Maxtor has come a long ways in the past few years and I am almost ready to try one.Quote:

I have a maxtor 20 gig..haven't had any problems with it since i got it over a year ago...
The drive for my new computer will definitely be an IBM!
never tried quantum, I'd imagine they are just getting rid of the Quantums they still have..
just don't buy Hitachi and you'll be fine, i had so many problems with this Hitachi drive that came with my computer..corrupted my info 5 times before the whole drive just went.. <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0">
Quantum's are POS? I've got a 15 GIG Q Bigfoot running for over a year now. Just lucky I guess.
My kids computer has my older 4.3 GB quantum 5 1/4 hard disk in it, and it was purchased with a pentium 200MMX in early 1997. The CPU and nearly everything else from that computer has died, but it is still working. It is danged slow, though!
ive had plenty of quantums and never had any trouble with them, although alot of the hdd in the new dell machine have stuffed up, ps wot does pos mean??????

I've had a Quantum Bigfoot 4.3 in and out of my possession for some years, it keeps coming back to haunt me <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0"> Still works perfectly though, if rather slow. Quantums are well represented in my dead drive pile, but so is everything else except IBM, I've not had one of them fail yet. Guess what's in my own machine?
BTW , POS = piece of sh*t (self censor mode on)

All the time I've worked with comps Quantums sucked. The bigfoots - good thought, REALLY REALLY bad follow though...
As I said in another thread, I own 7 maxtors, from 96 to now, and I love 'em.

I also bought what I thought was a 40 gig Maxtor only to find out that it was a Quantum. I got a little mad and considered taking it back. I kept it anyway. I believe it will work for at least a year or so. Besides I keep everything backed up so well that a drive failure can be easily overcome. My experiance (with customers machines)has been that Quantums fail more often that Maxtor.
ALL my ystems are running Quantum drives , One is almost 6 years old from and old IBM p75
No problems with them at all and I work my systems hard at times , I tried a Maxtor 20 gig , it was so noisey that my ears rang after I shut down my system , I returned it and got a Quantum drive
My friend uses Maxtors and he has had one bad drive , He runs an ftp server on 2 Maxtors with no problems after returning the bad drive :p
I had a computer built last October. I had a 20 gig Maxtor in it. At the beginning of March it failed. I returned it and instead, got a Maxtor 40 gig. It lasted until July and it also failed. At this point I gave up and replaced it with a WD 40 gig. One thing I have noted is that this drive is quieter. Now that I really think of it both of the Maxtors were very noisy. Don't know about this drive we will see how long it lasts. Anyway, hurray for backups. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

If the Maxtors were noisy then there was something wrong with the drives from the start as I have 8 Maxtor drives in my systems here that range from 20Gb to 40Gb & they are all 'Quiet as a Mouse' even with the Acoustic management turned off!!!!
I won't use anything other than Maxtors & IBM's with the occassional Seagate when the others are in short supply.
It's funny to hear all your opinions. Most people I talk to can't stand Maxtors. I myself from 4 years of experience (not much, I know) love using Quantum. I've had tons more maxtors come in with problems then I've had Quantum. I myself own two quantum drives for years now. Not one problem. I guess this is all just my personal experience, and from talking to other people. IMHO, Maxtor would be the last drive I'd buy. It's sad that Quantum left. Now, I'm an IBM fan. I must agree with most of you though, those Bigfoot drives that Quantum made were garbage. Of all the quantum drives I saw bad,(which were few) I'd say a good 80% of them were bigfoots. Just my 2 cents.
I've posted this in another thread, but I think it bears repeating here:
ALL hard drives (with the exception of JTS, may they RIP - rest in pieces :D ) make good quality hard drives. All of the manufacturers have put out a few bad batches which ends up ruining their reputation. That's why one person says "WD is great but Seagate and Quantum suck" and another says "Seagate and Maxtor rocks but WD is rubbish."
Most PC makers, whether they be small time shops or huge OEM's like Dell or HP, tend to buy their hard drives (and other components) in batches and usually from the same manufacturer. So the chance of getting a lot of bad drives in one single shipment is likely since they're made in batches with similar quality. Hence the bad experiences and brand-loyalty that most people have had with one drive or the other.
If one HD manufacturer continually manufactured bad drives, do you think they would stay in business for very long? Especially when there is plenty of competition and tight profit margins? I think not.
